Gophers Finish 12th at Pre-National Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Alec Basten led the University of Minnesota men's cross country team to a 12th-place finish at the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday as some of the top teams in the nation got a preview of the host course for the upcoming national championships next month at LaVern Gibson Championship Course.
Basten, who set the school record for an eight-kilometer course earlier this season, finished 16th with a time of 23:49.5 on Saturday while Jack Manderscheid added a 32nd-place performance with a time of 24:11.0. Owen Hoeft (112th, 24:57.0), Jordan MacIntosh (116th, 24:59.4) and Evan Ferlic (159th, 25:24.4) rounded out the scoring for Minnesota as the Maroon & Gold totaled 435 points.
The Gophers also had competitors in the men's open eight-kilometer race with a trio of top-25 finishers. Khalid Hussein led Minnesota in the race with a 13th-place finish at 25:19.0 followed by Robert Wagner in 19th at 25:32.4 and Dawson LaRance in 25th at 25:48.0.
Additionally, the University of Minnesota sent a contingency of Gophers to Ettrick, Wis., for UW-La Crosse's Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational. On the men's side, Hunter Lucas led the Maroon & Gold with a fourth-place finish at 25:07.4 while Seth Eliason came in 16th at 25:35.1 and Declan Dahlberg finished 28th at 25:52.7. On the women's side, Kayla Baker finished 26th with a time of 23:12.3 while Courtney West was 29th at 23:16.6.
