MINNEAPOLIS ā Coming off the second tournament win of his career, Minnesota junior Angus Flanagan has been named the Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Week, it was announced Wednesday.
As the Minnesota men's golf team captured its first team title in over five years, Flanagan led the way at the Macdonald Cup in New Haven, Conn. He shot a 2-under 68 Sunday to finish 6-under at 204 for the tournament, setting a career best score for 54-holes and matching a career best for tournament score to par.
Flanagan, who was the tournament medalist for the second time in his career after also doing so at last year's Big Ten Championship, birdied No. 3 but bogeyed holes five and six to make the turn at 1-over. He fared much better on the back nine with a birdie on No. 11 and consecutive birdies on 16-17 to hold off teammate Evan Long, who finished in second at 3-under.
On Saturday, an opening-round 67 for Flanagan was followed by a second-round 69. He had four birdies in each round and tied for the lead with Long through 36 holes.
As a team, Minnesota finished with a 10-under 830 (274-275-281). That gave the Gophers a 24-stroke victory over second-place Princeton as they won their first team title since the 2014 Big Ten Championships. The 830 was the team's lowest 54-hole score since at least the 2000-01 season, while the 10-under par score was the team's lowest score to par since going 17-under at the 2016 Alister Mackenzie Invitational.
An All-Big Ten Second Team honoree a year ago, Flanagan has continued his strong play into his junior year. He has played in all three tournaments and leads the Gophers in scoring (69.78 average), rounds under par (6) and tournaments leading the team (2).
Flanagan becomes the first Gopher to take home Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors since teammate Thomas Longbella did it as a freshman on Nov. 10, 2016.
Minnesota will look to build on their tournament success when it's back in action next week at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate, Oct. 7-8, in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
