Preview: Gophers to Visit Big Ten Rival Iowa
10/22/2019 10:30:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving
After opening up the 2019-20 season with a pair of nonconference duals against Florida and Florida State, the Minnesota swimming and diving program will face its first Big Ten Conference opponent this weekend. The Gophers travel to Iowa City on Saturday, Oct. 26 for an 11 a.m. battle with the Hawkeyes.
SERIES HISTORY
These two Big Ten rivals last met one year ago, when the Gophers swept the Hawkeyes on both the men's and women's side, 185.5-141.5 and 189.5-109.5, respectively. Overall, the Minnesota women are 9-0 against Iowa dating back through the 2010-11 season. The men also claim an overarching series advantage, having gone 7-2 against Iowa during that stretch.
A LOOK AT THE IOWA WOMEN
Following a tri-dual win against Michigan State and Northern Iowa (183-113), the Hawkeyes enter the dual at 2-0. Last weekend, the Iowa women traveled to Dallas, Tex. and finished fourth at the SMU Classic with 242 points.
THE HAWKEYE MEN
On the men's side, Iowa comes into Saturday's dual slightly less battle-tested. The Hawkeyes' lone competition of the season came in the form of a home dual against Michigan State, in which they proved victorious, 180-112.
GOPHERS GOING THE DISTANCE
There was only one Golden Gopher to win multiple events against Florida State last weekend: sophomore Abbey Kilgallon. The Bridgewater, N.J. native touched the wall first in both the 500 free and 1000 free, registering respective times of 4:55.57 and 10:04.51.
Junior Cameron Kelley also won the 1000 free for the men, adding to an impressive evening of long distance performances for the U. As they push to extend their dominance against Iowa over the present decade, the Gophers will need to maintain this level of long distance success.
YUDASHKIN STEPPING UP
In the men's competition last week, junior Eitan Yudashkin was a bright spot for the Gophers. A native of Kiryat Motzkin, Israel, Yudashkin finished first in the 200 breast and second in the 100 breast. At this early stage of the season, Yudashkin is emerging as the leader of a group of promising breaststrokers for the Maroon and Gold.
TIME TO GET COOKING
Junior Emily Cook also performed well last week, especially when taking the rainy outdoor conditions of Tallahassee, Fla. into account. Cook won the 200 back, while also finishing second in the 100 back. The Minnesota women will likely go as far in this weekend's backstroke events as Cook and senior All-American Tevyn Waddell take them.
VETERAN WATCH - WOMEN
In addition to Cook, fellow All-Americans Lindsey Kozelsky and Waddell also won events for the Gophers last week. Kozelsky claimed the top spot in the 200 breast, while Waddell's win came during the 100 back. Kozelsky has already swam multiple NCAA 'B' Cut times in both the 100 breast and 200 breast through the first two weeks of the season. As two of the more accomplished swimmers on the team, this duo will always be a major factor heading into any major dual.
IN THE DIVING WELL - WOMEN
Newcomers Jae Sarkis and Jaclynn Fowler are the divers that have encountered the most success to this juncture. Each diver achieved an NCAA Diving Zone qualifying score in the three-meter last week, with Sarkis doing so for the second consecutive meet. Although these two provide a promising outlook for this diving group, the Gophers will be hoping for a breakout performance from one of their many talented divers in Iowa City.
VETERAN WATCH - MEN
On the heels of an impressive opening week for Tim Sates, the junior further established himself as the core component of the men's freestyle group last weekend. Sates added two more top-three finishes at Florida State, finishing second in the 200 free. While Sates and Kelley have powered the Gophers in the freestyle events thus far, senior captain Matthew Thomas is doing the same in the butterfly events. The Hollister, Calif. native won the 100 fly last week and also placed second in the 200 fly.
IN THE DIVING WELL - MEN
After freshman Jake Butler swept the diving events against Florida and earned Big Ten Diver of the Week, a more seasoned Gopher led the charge in week two. Maxim Royzen finished third in both the one-meter and three-meter versus Florida State, capturing an NCAA Diving Zone qualifying time in the former. Royzen, along with returners Ryan Phillip, Aiden Werner and Duncan Lester, will shoulder the weight for the Minnesota men this upcoming weekend in the diving well.
