BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Redshirt junior Alec Basten broke the University of Minnesota eight-kilometer record in his season debut on Saturday to lead the Maroon & Gold at Lehigh's Paul Short Run.

One of four Gophers scorers to post a personal record in the men's college gold 8K, Basten finished third in the individual race while his time 23:26.7 unseated Hassan Mead's previous school record of 23:29, set at the 2011 Big Ten championships.

Meanwhile, Jack Manderscheid also earned a top-10 finish and a place on Minnesota's all-time top-10 list. Manderscheid placed 10th for the Maroon & Gold while his eight-kilometer time of 23:40.4 now ranks seventh all-time at Minnesota. Owen Hoeft (35th, 24:04.0) and Jordan MacIntosh (65th, 24:20.0) also notched personal records for the Gophers while Evan Ferlic (124th, 24:42.1) closed out the scoring for Minnesota.

The Gophers finished fifth in the team standings out of 44 programs with 223 points – finishing ahead of 39 programs including No. 23 Iona and No. 29 Villanova.

Quotable
"Our front end was really good today, and we took a step forward as a program this weekend. It was a good performance for us," Minnesota men's coach Steve Plasencia said. "Alec Basten ran firm and fast, and anytime you can say you broke a record held by Hassan Mead – an Olympian and an all-time great – you know you did something special."
