Gophers Put on Strong Performance at Head of the Mississippi

10/5/2019 8:22:00 PM | Rowing

MINNEAPOLIS - The Gophers opened up their season with a successful campaign at the Head of the Mississippi Regatta Saturday. Minnesota swept the top spots in all three events they competed in. The Varsity 4+ kicked off the day with a solid performance and was followed by the Novice 8+. Minnesota closed out their day with the Women's Collegiate 8+ event where the Gophers went on to take the top four spots. The Gophers earned eight medals: three gold, three silver and two bronze.

Miranda Cyr, Meg Messer, Kirrali Schofield, Isabella Bejaran, Harriet Haege and Zoe McDougall all made their first collegiate appearances in the Maroon and Gold as members of the Varsity team. Novice team member, freshman Grace Odell, competed in her first Varsity race in the 4V8 after competing in the Women's Collegiate Freshman 8+.

Quotable
"The racing conditions were very challenging today and I am proud of the way our team handled them. The energy and fearlessness the group brought to the course showed in their results. The squad is learning how to compete within themselves and they're showing that we have a lot of depth in the middle boats. It is going to be fun to see who emerges. And a huge shout out to our novice group on their first competition. We have a talented group of new rowers this year and they are important to our team.  Our top 4+ today had 4 former novices in it: Sydney Large, Gabby Mullally, Lindsay Eliasen and Melissa Wiebke. " - Alicea Strodel, head coach

"We are extremely excited with today's results. The crews were able to execute a full race in very difficult conditions. It was great to achieve that in front of a home crowd and see the varsity have a similarly dominant performance to motivate our young team as we move forward this fall. We cannot wait to see what the team can achieve with even more training." - Jeff Forrester, assistant coach
