MINNEAPOLIS – Looking for his second straight tournament victory, Minnesota junior Angus Flanagan is tied for the lead through 36 holes at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
Playing rounds one and two Monday, Flanagan posted consecutive rounds of 66 to sit 8-under for the tournament at 132, tying Colorado State's Parathakorn Suyasri atop the leaderboard. In each round, Flanagan recorded six birdies against two bogeys, including a stretch of four straight during round one between holes 5-8. He then carried that on in round two as he birdied three of the first six holes.
The 132 for Flanagan also ties for the lowest score through 36 holes in program history with teammate Thomas Longbella, who accomplished the feat at this year's Maui Jim Intercollegiate. Flanagan leads the team with eight rounds under par this year.
As a team, Minnesota is in fourth place through 36 holes with a 1-under 559 (285-274). BYU leads the 12-team field at 18-under, while Colorado State (-16) and Auburn (-9) are the only other teams ahead of the Gophers.
Bolstering the team's efforts were freshman Connor Glynn and sophomore Lincoln Johnson, both of whom are currently in the top 15.
Glynn is tied for 13th at 1-under with a 139. After a 1-over 71 in the opening round, he followed that with a 68 in round two to tie a career best for 18 holes in both strokes and score-to-par. He was 2-over through five holes but birdied three of the next four holes to close out the front nine and added a birdie on No. 16 to finish in the red.
Johnson is one shot back of Glynn as he sits at even par with a 140 to find himself in a tie for 15th. An opening-round 75 for Johnson left him tied for 38th, but he countered that with a 65 in round two to climb 23 spots up the leaderboard. The 65 also tied his score from last year's opening round Maui Jim Intercollegiate for the best of his career. In addition to three birdies in round two, Johnson eagled the par-4 sixth hole to finish 5-under.
Senior Thomas Longbella is tied for 40th at 8-over after a 73 in round one and 75 in round two. Meanwhile, junior Evan Long is alone in 52nd at 13-over with a 153 (75-78).
Minnesota will tee off in Tuesday's final round beginning with Long at 8 a.m., while Longbella, Johnson, Glynn and Flanagan will follow in 10-minute intervals.
