MINNEAPOLIS – Sammy Walker scored on Minnesota's first and only shot attempt in double overtime as Gopher Hockey skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with No. 4/5 Notre Dame and then picked up the Big Ten bonus point by scoring in the 3-on-3 overtime session at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
In a game that officially stands as a tie in the eyes of the NCAA, Minnesota (3-3-1 overall, 0-0-1-1 Big Ten) rallied twice in the third period with goals from Nathan Burke and Scott Reedy as three of the game's four official goals came in less than a minute of action. Jack Perbix picked up an assist for the Maroon & Gold. Notre Dame (4-0-1, 0-0-1-0) found goals from Mike O'Leary and Trevor Janicke.
Walker, who also scored a 5-on-5 overtime winner against Niagara in the 2019-20 home opener, found the net at 1:37 of the second overtime after being set up by Blake McLaughlin and Ryan Zuhlsdorf. While the 3-on-3 overtime goal does not count towards official points for the Maroon & Gold skaters, Walker has now found the back of the net in five of Minnesota's seven games this season.
The Gophers were outshot 33-36 in the series opener, going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill and 0-for-3 on the power play.
Notable
Jared Moe backstopped the Gophers for 66:37 on Friday night to officially earn a tie in goal, moving to 2-1-1 on the year. The freshman netminder made a career-high 29 saves in the official 65 minutes of action while adding two more in the 3-on-3 session.
Quotable
"(Moe) had a great game tonight, there were chances where they probably could have pounded it in there even in overtime," Walker said. "He stood on his head and kept us in there."
