Minnesota Falls 6-3 to Nittany Lions

11/16/2019 11:18:00 PM | Men's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS – Seniors Tyler Nanne and Joey Marooney recorded multi-point games for the Gopher men's hockey program, but Penn State's high-powered offense proved to be too much to overcome as Minnesota dropped a 6-3 contest to the No. 8 Nittany Lions on Saturday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

The Gophers (4-6-2 overall, 1-3-2-2) jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period with tallies from juniors Scott Reedy and Cullen Munson with Munson's tally standing as his first collegiate point with the Maroon & Gold. After Penn State (9-2-0, 5-1-0-0) made it a one-goal game early in the second period, Sampo Ranta bounced back with a goal for Minnesota as the junior forward extended his career-best point streak to five games. Marooney assisted on the Gophers' final two goals of the night for his first career multi-point game while the senior forward doubled his career point total in the series finale.

The Nittany Lions controlled the remainder of the night, however, with five unanswered goals to seal the win and the series sweep.

The Gophers outshot Penn State 38-31, falling for this first time this season in a game where they held the advantage in shots (3-1-0). Minnesota was 1-for-2 on the penalty kill and 1-for-6 on the power play – again falling for the first time this year when scoring on the advantage (3-1-0).

Jared Moe fell to 3-3-1 in the loss, making 25 saves on 31 shots. Peyton Jones made 35 saves on 38 shots for the win, moving to 9-1-0.

Notable
Reedy's power-play goal to start the night's scoring snapped a seven-game, 17-chance drought on the power play for the Maroon & Gold.

Quotable
"The mistakes we made were glaring, and that's too good of a hockey team to make those mistakes (against)," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "Tip your hat to Penn State, they have an enormous amount of talent…those guys capitalized when they had the opportunity."
