Minnesota Sweeps Michigan for 20th Win

The No. 5 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated No. 23 University of Michigan, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20. With the win, the Golden Gophers garner their 20th win of the season (20-4) and improve to 14-2 in the Big Ten. Michigan falls to 18-8 overall and 11-5 in conference play.   

Taylor Morgan led the Gophers with nine kills. She hit .500, had three blocks and one dig. Claire Sheehan had eight kills, five digs and two blocks. Airi Miyabe offered up eight kills, two blocks and one dig. Stephanie Samedy had seven kills, nine digs and four blocks. Alexis Hart added six kills, hit .333, had four digs and two blocks. Regan Pittman had a team-best nine blocks, as well as four digs and two kills. Bayley McMenimen had 16 assists and four digs, while Tamara Dolonga added 12 assists and three digs. CC McGraw offered 16 digs, while Rachel Kilkelly had 10. 

As a team, Minnesota had 40 kills, 57 digs, 13 blocks and hit .246. Michigan had 41 kills, 65 digs, four blocks and hit .080. 

Notable
Minnesota has now won over 20 wins in a season in 37 years. It also marks the fifth year in a row for head coach Hugh McCutcheon and seven in his eight-year tenure.

"I was impressed with our consistency," head coach Hugh McCutcheon said. "that's one of the main themes we talked about in the lockerroom after the match and really playing point to point. There were some highs and lows throughout the match, but we stayed pretty steady and I thought we got on with the task at hand. It was impressive. Very happy for our team."

Minnesota hosts Nebraska, Friday, Nov. 22 at Maturi Pavilion. Match time is set for 8 p.m., and will be streamed on BTN.

How They Won the Set
First Set: After Michigan started off with an early 8-3 lead, back-to-back kills by Pittman and Hart turned the set around and tied it back up at 10-10. After a kill by Miyabe, Minnesota took the lead for good at 12-11. The Gophers had four blocks. The Wolverines only hit .021 in the set. 
Second Set: The set was close throughout with nine tie scores and three lead changes. With the set tied at 23-23, two kills by Samedy and Sheehan solidified the set for Minnesota. 
Third Set: Much like the second set, the score was close throughout. There were seven tie scores, and four lead changes. With the score 21-20, Minnesota went on a 4-0 run to solidify the match. Michigan used a timeout as the Gophers led, 23-20, but Minnesota came out of the break with a block by Pittman and a kill by Sheehan for the win.
