MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Gopher men's tennis team kicked off their annual home site tournament, the Gopher Invitational, at Baseline Tennis Center today. The Maroon & Gold started the tournament off hot, finishing with a team record of 7-2 in singles play and 6-1 in doubles play at the conclusion of day one.

Coming into the tournament with a young roster, the Gopher freshmen knew they needed to step up in a big way to kick off their first career Gopher Invite, so they did. The first year duo of Siim Troost and Bodin Zarkovic battled their way to a comeback victory over Feit/McDonald of Gonzaga, winning 6-4. They then went on to both win their singles match, with Troost easily handling Feit 6-1, 6-2, while Zarkovic outlasted McDonald in a three set marathon 6-2, 6-7, 7-6.

The longstanding Gopher tandem of junior Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy also came to play on Friday, winning their first doubles match against Brookes and Berdusco of Northwestern. Despite Allen losing his singles match to Brookes, Ogilvy defeated Berdusco 6-2, 6-2 to advance the pair to the next round of play. They went on to win their second singles match 6-2 against the Illinois pair of Budic/Bancila.

Notable:

All four freshmen for the Maroon & Gold (Dylan Heap, Daniel Martin, Siim Troost, and Bodin Zarkovic) went undefeated on the day, combining for an impressive record of 4-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles play.

Quotable:

"Everybody is always excited to play the home tournament so we all came out on fire," said Gophers senior Eli Ogilvy. "Jackson and I played a tough Northwestern team and performed well. I think Jackson and I are playing great singles and doubles so we are very confident for tomorrow, but the main goal is to just enjoy ourselves."

Up Next:

The Gophers pick up play right away again tomorrow at Baseline Tennis Center at 8 a.m. Tomorrow's schedule is set to feature the next two rounds of singles play, as well as another round of doubles play.
