Moe Backstops ‘U’ to 3-1 Win Over Michigan

11/9/2019 7:15:00 PM | Men's Hockey

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Jared Moe set a new career high for saves as the Gopher Hockey program picked up a 3-1 win over Michigan on Saturday evening at Yost Ice Arena – securing 5-of-6 Big Ten points on the weekend for Minnesota after Friday's 2-2 overtime tie and 3-on-3 overtime win.

Moe improved to 3-2-1 on the year with a 38-save performance on 39 shots between the pipes while Minnesota found goals from Brannon McManus, Jonny Sorenson and Sammy Walker. The Gophers (4-4-2 overall, 1-1-2-2 Big Ten) picked up their first conference win of the year.

McManus continued to find success against the Wolverines (3-5-2, 0-3-1-0), putting the Maroon & Gold on the board at 17:28 of the first period as he and Sampo Ranta hooked up for the third-straight game. McManus, who is Minnesota's overall active-leading scorer with 42 career points and 25 career goals, also leads all active Minnesota skaters with 10 points (seven goals, three assists) in 12 career games against Michigan. McManus' three-game goal scoring streak and Ranta's three-game point streak tie both of their career-long streaks. Ben Meyer also picked up an assist on the goal.

Following a scoreless second period, Sorenson added to the lead when he deposited a loose puck into the open net for his second career goal at 2:52 of the third period. Bryce Brodzinski and Ryan Johnson picked up assists on the goal.

After making 33-straight saves to open the game, Moe finally surrendered a goal to Michigan's Emil Ohrwall at 9:42 of the final session.

But the Wolverines would get no closer and Sammy Walker snapped a four-game point drought with an empty-net tally at 19:48. Meyers and Ranta picked up their second assists of the night on the win-sealing goal.

The Gophers were outshot 39-24 in the victory and were held without a power-play goal (0-for-1) while going unblemished (3-for-3) on the penalty kill.

Notable
Despite being unbeaten in three of the last four games, Minnesota actually snapped a five-game winless streak on Saturday. The Maroon & Gold are now officially 1-2-2 over the last five contests – while picking up the Big Ten bonus point with a win in 3-on-3 overtime in both ties.

Quotable
"We're very happy to get a win on a Saturday night on the road in a hard-fought hockey game," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We had outstanding goaltending by our young freshman, (Jared) Moe."
