MINNEAPOLIS – Sarah Bacon added to her outstanding year in the diving well Thursday evening, winning gold in the women's synchronized 3-meter alongside former Olympian and Texas alum Kassidy Cook at the USA Diving Winter National Championships in Minneapolis.
With the performance, Bacon is not only a USA Diving National Champion, but has officially punched her ticket to the 2020 FINA World Cup in Tokyo as well. Held in April, the World Cup is the final opportunity to qualify for a spot in the 2020 Olympic Games.
During Wednesday's competition, Bacon and Cook were the only pair to score more than 65 points on all three optional dives in the finals, including a front 2 ½ with one twist and a back 2 ½ pike that scored 70.20 points apiece.
Already in 2019, Bacon has been crowned an NCAA National Champion (1-meter), a Pan American Games gold medalist (1-meter), a FINA World Championships silver medalist (1-meter) and a Pan Am Games silver medalist (synchronized 3-meter).
The USA Diving Winter National Championships continue through Sunday, December 22. Bacon is also scheduled to compete in the women's 3-meter, with prelims and semi-finals taking place on Dec. 20 and finals occurring on Dec. 22.
