Gophers Open Day One of Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS – Day one of the 2019 Minnesota Invite is officially in the books, with Minnesota registering notable finishes in both the 200 medley and 800 free relay competitions.

Wednesday's competition served as an evening relay session, as the aforementioned events were the only two to take place on the Invite's opening day.

Women | Gophers 52 (5th)
Ā 
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Emily Cook, Lindsey Kozelsky, Tevyn Waddell and Maggie Summit led the way with a fifth place finish (out of 23) for the Gophers. The quartet swam the team's best time in the event so far this season, finishing the A final in 1:37.95 while cutting 1.89 off their previous best.

As for the 800 free relay, Summit, Jordan McGinty, Waddell and Kate Sullivan recorded Minnesota's top finish, completing the event in 7:11.53.

Men | Gophers 46 (T5th)

The Gopher men also hauled in their top time of the season in the 200 medley relay, dropping 1.26 off their previous best. Gavin Olson, Max McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Matthew Thomas teamed up to swim the event in 1:27.04 while representing the U in the A final.

In the 200 free relay, the team of Tim Sates, Cameron Kelley, Kyle Van Niekerk and Nick Saulnier paced the Maroon and Gold with an A finals time of 6:28.68.

While swimming in the 800 free relay B final, Pokkinen established a new personal best time in the 200 free. Pokkinen touched the wall in 1:39.21, just beating out his previous mark of 1:39.28.

Notable
Minnesota recorded season best times in both the men's (1:27.04) and women's (1:37.95) 200 medley relay races.

Up Next
Competition will resume tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CST, beginning with the women's and men's 500 free preliminary races. Tomorrow's events will also include the 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay, men's one-meter and women's three meter. Diving will begin at roughly 12 p.m., while event finals are scheduled for a 6 p.m start.
