Gophers Notch Multiple NCAA B Cuts on Day Two of Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS – Competition for day two of the Minnesota Invite wrapped up Thursday evening, as the first full day featured NCAA "B" Cut times for Gopher swimmers Abbey Erwin, Jordan McGinty, Kate Sullivan and Tevyn Waddell.
Women | Gophers 162 (5th)
Although the swimming events consumed much of day two, the diving well provided one of the biggest highlights for Minnesota. Sophomore Joy Zhu came home with first place in the women's one-meter finals, delivering a score of 302.40. It was a special day for Gopher divers, as freshman Jaclynn Fowler made it a one-two finish by placing second with a six-dive score of 288.90.
Thursday evening's finals began with the 500 free, with four Minnesota swimmers qualifying based on their performances in preliminaries: Erwin, Sullivan, Abbey Kilgallon and Kelli McCarthy.
Both Erwin and Sullivan made noise in the finals, notching NCAA "B" Cut times of 4:47.05 and 4:45.79, respectively. For Sullivan, the mark also signified a personal best time, as the sophomore dropped nearly four seconds from her previous top time prior to today.
Moving on to the 200 IM, Waddell qualified for the evening A final by swimming an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:51.09 in the preliminary session. Waddell was joined by McGinty, Madison Preiss, Patricia Van Law, Rachel Butler and Grace Bennin in qualifying for the 200 IM finals.
McGinty ultimately recorded the highlight of the 200 IM finals for the Maroon and Gold, as the freshman swam an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:59.61. The time also marked McGinty's new personal best.
Four Gopher swimmers also competed in the 50 free finals: Maggie Summit, Lindsey Kozelsky, Olivia Bloomer and Katherine Wagner.
Both Summit and Bloomer notched personal best times in the 50 free en route to qualifying for the evening round. Summit touched the wall in 22.91, while Bloomer rewrote her previous best with a 23.07 mark. In the 50 free finals, Bloomer again topped her personal best, touching in 22.92.
Wrapping up the night, the relay team of Emily Cook, Kozelsky, Waddell and McGinty combined to swim an NCAA "B" cut time of 3:33.38 in the 400 medley relay finals.
Men | Gophers 106 (6th)
Two Gophers qualified for the 500 free finals in junior Cameron Kelley and sophomore Aidan Dillon. Kelley was the highlight of the event for Minnesota on the men's side, as he swam his way to a new personal best time of 4:24.21 in the event finals.
Senior Matthew Thomas represented Minnesota in the 200 IM finals, swimming a new personal best time of 1:48.17. Earlier in the 200 IM prelims, junior Evan Yoder swam a personal best time as well.
In the 50 free, sophomore Max McHugh qualified for the evening finals while showing off his versatility as more than just one of the nation's best breaststrokers. McHugh touched the wall in 20.31 in the event finals.
Adding to an already impressive debut campaign, freshman Jake Butler placed second in the men's three-meter diving finals, posting a score of 362.90. Butler was joined by juniors Maxim Royzen and Duncan Lester in qualifying for the evening session.

"It was an awesome night for our teams, both the men and the women," said senior associate head coach Terry Ganley. "The competition here is the best in the nation and we stood up tonight and competed. It was just an awesome experience all-around. Season-best times, lifetime-best performances against competition like this is a huge step forward for our team leading into Big Tens and NCAAs."
