McHugh and Zhu Dominate on Minnesota Invite Day Three

MINNEAPOLIS – Day three of the Minnesota Invite concluded Friday evening, featuring impressive performances in both the diving well and 100 breast events for the Maroon and Gold.

Women | Gophers 303 (5th)

For her encore of Thursday night's first place finish in the one-meter, sophomore Joy Zhu made it two-for-two by taking first in the three-meter on Friday night. Zhu finished with a six-dive score of 346.40.

Friday began with the 400 IM prelims, as four members of the Minnesota women's team qualified for the evening finals in Rachel Butler, Abbey Erwin, Kelli McCarthy and Patricia Van Law. Van Law set a new personal best of 4:17.75 in the finals, while Butler swam her way to a personal best and NCAA "B" Cut with a 4:15.76 time.

In the 100 fly, senior Tevyn Waddell paced the Gophers in prelims while securing an NCAA "B" Cut time of 52.55. Teammates Madison Preiss, Emma Linscott, Bronwyn Tuff, Maggie Summit and Grace Wollschlager joined Waddell in qualifying for the 100 fly finals. Waddell improved upon her previous daily time with a 52.20 mark in the finals, powering her to a third place finish in the A final.

Freshman Jordan McGinty and sophomore Kate Sullivan represented the U in the 200 free finals, with McGinty hauling in the U's top finish with a 1:47.58 personal best time.

Senior Lindsey Kozelsky swam the second-fastest time of prelims in the 100 breast, touching in 59.46 and leading a qualifying group including Emma Lezer, Grace Bennin and Preiss. Kozelsky and Lezer both earned their way into the A final, with Kozelsky finishing second overall in the event with a season-best 58.66 time.

Both Waddell and Emily Cook notched NCAA "B" Cuts in the 100 back while qualifying for the evening A finals. In the end, Waddell touched in 52.99 and Cook completed the event in 53.73 to lead the charge for the U. Lillianna Brooks, Summit and Tuff also participated in the 100 back finals, as the duo both swam personal best times on Friday.

The team of Kozelsky, Olivia Bloomer, Summit and Waddell teamed up to swim the top time for the Gophers in the 200 free relay, as they achieved a new season-best time of 1:31.47 in the event.

Men | Gophers 198 (5th)

For the Gopher men, the highlight of the night was none other than returning All-American Max McHugh. In the 100 breast prelims, McHugh swam the nation's fastest time of the season, achieving an NCAA "A" Cut time of 50.74. Joined by Eitan Yudashkin, Evan Yoder and Nic Chromey in the evening finals, McHugh finished strong by taking first place in the A final with a time of 51.35.

Freshman Isaac Barrera was the bright spot for the Gophers in the 400 IM, as the newcomer established a new personal best time of 3:57.75 in the event finals. Justin Torres, Evan Yoder and Aidan Dulaney also qualified for the evening round.

Setting the tone for the Maroon and Gold in the 100 fly, senior Matthew Thomas swam his way to an NCAA "B" Cut by touching the wall in 46.81 and finishing 10th overall in the event. Thomas was joined by fellow senior Tuomas Pokkinen, as well as freshmen Desmon Sachtjen and Shane Rozeboom, in qualifying for the finals in the 100 fly.

In the 200 free, Tim Sates, Nick Saulnier, Cameron Kelley and Kyle Van Niekerk all swam well enough to qualify for finals. Saulnier was the top finisher for the Gophers (1:36.95), while Kelley swam a personal best time of 1:37.71.

As for the 100 back, freshman Gavin Olson set the standard for the U with a personal best time of 48.50 in prelims. Cale Berkoff and Sachtjen also competed in evening finals, in which Olson replicated his time in prelims to boast Minnesota's top finish.

In the diving well, freshman Jake Butler and senior Jeremy Moser represented the Maroon and Gold in the evening one-meter finals. After finishing second in the three-meter Thursday night, Butler ultimately came home with third place on Friday after posting a score of 298.30. Moser finished right behind his freshman teammate, placing fourth with a score of 293.50.

The evening concluded with the men's 200 free finals, in which the relay team of Thomas, Pokkinen, McHugh and Saulnier finished in 1:20.83 to notch a new season-best time for Minnesota.

"This was a great night for Minnesota! We had quite a few personal best performances and saw a lot of improvements from prelims," said assistant coach Jesse Moore. "The Gophers are really showing up and displaying months of hard work this season. Their support of each other, their energy and their performances bode well for the rest of our season with the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Championships!"

Sophomore All-American Max McHugh set the nation's fastest time of the season in the 100 breast, swimming the event in 50.74 in prelims. McHugh capped off the day by taking first place in the men's 100 breast A final (51.35).

Up Next
Competition will resume Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CST, beginning with the women's and men's 200 back preliminary races. Saturday's events will also include the 1650 free, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free and men's and women's platform diving. Diving will begin at roughly 12 p.m., while event finals are scheduled for a 6 p.m start.
