Gophers Finish Strong on Minnesota Invite’s Final Day

MINNEAPOLIS – Competition for the Minnesota Invite's fourth and final day wrapped up on Saturday night, with five different Gophers securing NCAA "B" Cuts and Max McHugh swimming an "A" Cut in the 200 breast.

Women | Gophers 399 (5th)
 
After placing second in the 100 breast a night ago, senior All-American Lindsey Kozelsky qualified for the 200 breast A final on Saturday after posting a 2:11.67 time in prelims. Freshman Emma Lezer also made the cut for the A final, with Madison Preiss, Grace Bennin and Rachel Butler qualifying for the evening session as well.
 
In the end, Kozelsky placed third overall with a season-best finals time of 2:09.46. In addition, Lezer swam a new personal best time of 2:14.79 in the A final.
 
Earlier in the day, the 200 back started the Maroon and Gold off on the right foot as seven Gophers qualified for finals: Tevyn Waddell, Emily Cook, Lillianna Brooks, Jordan McGinty, Patricia Van Law, Kelli McCarthy and Rachel Butler.
 
While qualifying for the A final, Waddell notched an NCAA "B" Cut by completing the 200 back in 1:54.89. Waddell ultimately placed third overall in the event after swimming a 1:53.28 time in the finals.
 
In the 100 free, Maggie Summit, Olivia Bloomer and Kate Sullivan all qualified for the evening session, with Summit's time of 50.35 earning her a spot in the B final. Summit ended up besting that time during the event finals with a new personal best mark of 49.70
 
As for the 200 fly, the U saw five swimmers qualify for finals in Bronwyn Tuff, Sullivan, Emma Linscott, Grace Wollschlager and Van Law. Sullivan came away with the Gophers' best finish, swimming a new personal best mark of 2:00.31 during the finals session.
 
Abbey Kilgallon swam Minnesota's fastest time of the day in the 1650 free. Touching in 16:19.61, Kilgallon recorded a new personal best, as well as an NCAA "B" Cut time.
 
The team of McGinty, Waddell, Summit and Bloomer set the bar for the Minnesota women in the 400 free relay, completing the event in 3:21.40. McGinty swam the fastest split, good for a new personal best time of 49.72 in the 100 free.
 
In the diving well, freshmen Jaclynn Fowler and Hannah Craley represented the U in the platform diving competition, with Fowler achieving the top score for Minnesota.

Men | Gophers 235 (6th)
 
For the second consecutive day, sophomore All-American Max McHugh swam an NCAA "A" Cut time. On Saturday, McHugh achieved the feat in the 200 breast, finishing the day with a finals time of 1:51.62 while placing second overall. McHugh's time currently ranks as the second-fastest in the country.
 
McHugh was joined by Justin Torres, Eitan Yudashkin and Evan Yoder in the evening session of the 200 breast.
 
Three Minnesota swimmers qualified for evening finals in the 200 back in Cale Berkoff, Gavin Olson and Nick Saulnier. Olson proved to be the highlight of the event, as the freshman secured an NCAA "B" Cut time of 1:44.71.
 
Tim Sates and Kyle Van Niekerk were the only Gophers to make the finals cut in the 100 free. Sates paced the Maroon and Gold with a finals time of 44.55.
 
In the 200 fly prelims, senior Matthew Thomas sped his way to another NCAA "B" Cut by completing the event in 1:45.55. Tuomas Pokkinen, Max Lezer, Isaac Barrera and Aidan Dulaney qualified for finals alongside Thomas, who placed third in the B final with a 1:45.39 time.
 
During the afternoon long distance session, sophomore Cameron Kelley hauled in an NCAA "B" Cut of his own to the tune of 15:25.28 time in the 1650 free.
 
The lineup of Sates, Thomas, Saulnier and Pokkinen teamed up to swim Minnesota's fastest time of the day in the 400 free relay. Sates delivered the quickest split for the U with a new personal best time of 44.20 in the 100 free.
 
Ryan Phillip was the lone Gopher to appear in Saturday's platform diving competition on the men's side.

Gavin Olson (200 back), Cameron Kelley (1650 free), Abbey Kilgallon (1650 free) Matthew Thomas (200 fly) and Tevyn Waddell (200 back) all registered NCAA "B" Cut times during Saturday's competition. Sophomore All-American Max McHugh notched an NCAA "A" Cut with his 1:51.62 time in the 200 breast – the second-fastest mark in the nation this season.

Up Next
Although competition will continue on Sunday, it will be a time trial long course day. Several Gophers will be vying for Olympic Trials cuts during Sunday's competition.
 
Following the conclusion of the Invite, Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center will host USA Diving World Cup Trials from Dec. 14-21. Minnesota's next official dual meet action will come on Saturday, Jan. 11 when the Gophers battle Hawaii to mark the conclusion of their holiday training trip.
