The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team has completed the first night of the 2019 Big Ten Championships at the Counsilman-Bilingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington, Ind. The Gophers sit tied for third place after the night's two relays with a total of 106 points heading into day two of competition.
The 200 Medley Relay team of Emily Cook, Lindsey Kozelsky, Tevyn Waddell and Zoe Avestruz swam a 1:36.22 to claim fifth place in the first race of this year's conference championships. Mackenzie Padington, Chantal Nack, Waddell and Avestruz comprised the 800 Freestyle Relay team and brought home the first medals of the meet for Minnesota as they finished the race in 7:00.10 to earn silver.
Both relays swam A cut times, automatically qualifying both teams of swimmers for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas from March 20-23. Additionally, Nack's lead off time of 1:43.16 qualified as an individual 'A' cut in the 200 Freestyle and set a new school record, replacing the previous record of 1:44.15 set by Padington back in 2017.
The second day of competition kicks off at 10:00 a.m. CT with the preliminary races of the 500 Freestyle, the 200 Individual Medley and the 50 Freestyle with the t-meter diving prelims starting at 12:00 p.m. CT. Finals for all four previously mentioned events as well as the 400 Medley Relay begin at 5:30 p.m. CT.
During tomorrow's competition, the Gophers will see Sarah Bacon look to defend her 2018 1-meter Big Ten Champion title and Padington enter the 500 Freestyle race seeded with the top time in the conference.
