Gophers Fall In First Game Against Patriots

The University of Minnesota baseball team fell, 9-0, tonight to Dallas Baptist in the first of a three-game series.
The Patriots, now 4-1 this season scored a run in the first, two in the second and three in both the fourth and fifth innings to solidify the win. Minnesota (1-4) mustered six hits, but committed five errors. DBU also added 10 hits in the win.
Minnesota had two hits apiece from Jack Wassel and Ben Mezzenga. Wassel, who had added his first double of the season, also ended an 11 pitch at-bat with a single. Mezzenga led off both the first and the fourth innings with a bunt single. Eli Wilson contributed a hit and a walk, while Max Meyer also added a single.
Starting pitcher Nick Lackney had the loss. He went 3.1 innings, gave up six runs, two of which were earned. Also seeing action on the mound was Joshua Culliver (1.2 IP), J.P. Massey (2.0 IP) and Gus Radel (1.0).
Dallas Baptist got on the board in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Luke Bandy walked and advanced to second on a strikeout, wild pitch. He then advanced to third on a passed ball. Bandy scored when Jimmy Glowenke singled to right for a 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, the Gophers got out of the inning with minimal damage as the Patriots left the bases loaded on a pop up to Jordan Kozicky.
DBU plated two unearned runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. After back-to-back Gopher errors, Bandy hit a double to left center to cushion the lead. The Patriots made it 6-0 in the fourth when they scored off an RBI grounder, followed by a two-RBI single. DBU plated another three in the fifth when it added two extra-base hits and two singles for a 9-0 lead.
Minnesota is back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Minnesota's Gus Radel and Zack Elliott made their collegiate debuts tonight. Radel came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth, while Elliott came into the game on a defensive switch in the bottom of the seventh. He added his first collegiate at bat in the top of the eighth.
