The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team closed out the first day of the 2019 Big Ten Championships with a pair of top-five relay finishes to put the Gophers in fourth place with an even 100 points heading into day two.
The 200 Medley Relay team of Matthew Thomas, Max McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Bowen Becker raced a strong 'B' cut time of 1:24.62 to claim 50 points for the Gophers right out of the gate.
Nick Saulnier, Tim Sates, Cameron Kelley and Kyle Van Niekerk swam a 6:22.87 to finish in fifth place in the 800 Freestyle Relay and match their teammates 50 point contribution.
Becker added an 'A' cut in the 50 Freestyle to his day one accomplishments as he matched the NCAA qualifying time of 19:00 during his time trial swim, which took place after the conclusion of the relay events. As the 2018 Big Ten Champion in the 50 Free, the senior enters tomorrow's competition looking to defend his title.
