Becker Sprints to Back-to-Back B1G Titles

2/28/2019 10:03:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving

The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team capped off day two of the 2019 Big Ten Championships by seeing senior Bowen Becker crowned the 2019 50 Freestyle Big Ten Champion. Other highlights of the second day of competition include a bronze-medal finish and school record for the 400 Medley Relay as well as 13 new individual personal records for the Gophers. The Maroon and Gold will look to build on today's success as they enter the third day of the meet in fifth place with 259 points.

Becker successfully defended his 2018 50 Freestyle Big Ten Title as he claimed this year's event win with a time of 19.11. The Las Vegas, Nev. native had the second-fastest prelims time after Michigan's Borges touched the wall a second faster during the morning session. Becker came back and out-touched Borges by the same one-second margin to secure the win.

The 400 Medley Relay team of Tom Donker, Max McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Becker earned Minnesota a set of bronze medals when they completed their race in 3:05.46. Their third-place time not only fell under the 'A' cut, but also set a new school record in the 400 Medley Relay, replacing the previous time of 3:06.90 set by Donker, Conner McHugh, Matthew Thomas, and Becker last season.

Nick Plachinski snagged himself a 19th place finish in the 500 Freestyle when he completed the race in 4:22.66, and Tuomas Pokkinen claimed 10th place in the 200 IM with a new fastest-time of 1:44.89.

In the diving well, Nick Yang earned a spot in the A final where he then took sixth place with an overall score of 387.65, bringing in crucial points for the Gophers.

After advancing to the consolation finals with his prelim score of 330.20, Jeremy Moser returned to the board and claimed the top-spot in the consolation competition--9th place overall--with a final score of 361.85

Maxim Royzen claimed 19th place in the one-meter diving competition with his score of 305.90, which automatically qualified him to compete at the NCAA Zone Diving meet in Austin, Texas this March. Yang and Moser will join him on March 11-13 thanks to their Zone qualifying scores.
