Gophers Win Their First Ever Courtside Classic

In the final day of the Courtside Classic the University of Minnesota women's tennis team downed the DePaul Blue Demons 5-2 to secure the weekend sweep and the first ever Courtside Classic tournament win in program history.
"We did a good job overall up and down the lineup" head coach Catrina Thompson said. "The grit and determination from the girls today was unmatched and I am proud of how we finished."
Doubles
Backed by strong pairings in doubles, the Gophers jumped to a quick 1-0 lead with wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. The No. 3 duo of River Hart and Bita Mancera would move to a 2-0 record on the weekend and 3-1 overall with their only loss coming from Taylor Johnson and Alaina Miller out of UCLA in their first match of the season.
Singles
Tiffany Huber clinched the Gophers' victory over DePaul with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-4) in the No. 2 spot. However, the bottom half of the lineup put the Gophers out to an early lead with Cammy Frei leading the way in straight-sets 6-2, 6-2. No. 6 River Hart forced a third set with DePaul's Yergler to eventually win 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 and give the Gophers the outright 5-2 win against the Blue Demons. The Gophers' only losses of the afternoon would come from the No. 1 match-up of Tina Kreinis and DePaul's Keisha Clousing as well as the No. 5 duel of Caitlyn Merzbacher and Marija Jovicic.
"It got close in the second set, but I kept my focus on going one point at a time" Huber said. "Going into this weekend our goal was to win the tournament and get the trophy for the first time so I kept that in the back of my mind."

Catrina Thompson and company look to remain unbeaten at home as they prepare for a double-header against South Dakota and Northern Iowa on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019. Matches are set to begin at 10:00am against the Coyotes followed by a 2:00pm match-up with the Panthers.
