Opponent Outlook: Wrapping Up the Big Ten Slate

MINNEAPOLIS – The defending Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Champion Gopher Baseball team returns next spring after an historic season in 2018, looking to build on the success of an NCAA Super Regional run.
The path will not be easy with the team's home slate at U.S. Bank Stadium eliminated for the season and six NCAA Tournament teams on the docket in non-conference along with the tough 24-game B1G schedule. Today, we examine the final two teams on Minnesota's schedule: Big Ten foes Indiana and Northwestern.

Indiana finished fifth in the Big Ten at 14-9 in league play while finishing 40-19 overall, falling against the host Texas at the NCAA Austin Regional last season … Jeff Mercer is in his first season as the head coach of the Hoosiers after spending three seasons leading Wright State … Indiana ranked no. 7 nationally with its combined 3.09 ERA and third with eight shutouts … junior right-hander Pauly Milto returns to the rotation after ranking no. 19 in the NCAA and second in the Big Ten with his 2.03 ERA. He finished 8-2 with 66 strikeouts in 79.2 innings … Indiana returns four of its top six hitters … sophomore outfielder Matt Gorski returns after leading the Hoosiers with his .356/.404/.554 slash line and 14 doubles … Minnesota swept a three-game set with a ranked Indiana team on May 4-6 last season at Siebert Field stretching its winning streak against the Hoosiers to five-straight games. The Gophers are now 111-47 in the all-time series.

Northwestern finished 12th in the Big Ten with a 6-18 conference mark while wrapping up 2018 with a 17-32 overall mark … head coach Spencer Allen returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Wildcats … Northwestern ranked no. 24 nationally in 2018 with a combined 90 stolen bases, but the Wildcats pitching staff finished 13th in the Big Ten with a 6.20 ERA last season … senior infielder Jack Dunn ranked no. 71 in the nation with his 21 stolen bases in 2018, returning as Northwestern's top leading hitter slashing .314/.401/.378 a year ago … junior infielder Alex Erro batted .297 a season ago, nearly matching Dunn with his 17 stolen bases … sophomore left-handers Jack Pagliarini and Quinn Lavelle returns to the pitching staff, combining for 21 starts as rookies. Pagliarini finished 1-3 with a 3.99 ERA in 12 appearances, striking out 54 batters in 47.1 innings … Minnesota owns a 166-79 all-time record against Northwestern, but the Wildcats took the most recent meeting with the Gophers on May 26, 2017 at the Big Ten Tournament. The Maroon & Gold swept the last series between the two teams son April 22-24, 2016.
