Minnesota Opens Road Trip at Penn State

2/6/2019 12:57:00 PM | Men's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher Hockey program opens a four-game road trip this weekend with a two-game series at No. 18 Penn State. Both games in the Friday/Saturday Big Ten series are slated for 5 p.m. CT puck drops on Big Ten Network.

Pitlick Named Big Ten First Star
Junior forward Rem Pitlick enters this weekend's series as the Big Ten First Star of the Week. The Nashville Predators prospect has already recorded career highs with 17 goals and 33 points this season (both stats lead the team) while Pitlick ranks tied for sixth in the nation in scoring. The junior, who skated in his 100th career game last weekend, has picked up points in 17 of the last 18 games for Minnesota and enters the weekend having recorded multi-point performances in four-straight contests. Pitlick, whose nine goals since Jan. 1 are tied for the national lead, is also riding a six-game goal streak and a nine-game point streak (both are career bests). Pitlick has points in 22 of Minnesota's 27 games this year and has not been held off the score sheet in back-to-back games.

Gophers Pace the Big Ten on Special Teams
Minnesota's special teams units continued to shine last weekend against Michigan as the power play went 4-for-11 in the series while the penalty kill was a perfect 12-for-12. The Gophers lead the Big Ten in both statistics for the season, .270 on the advantage (27-for-100, fifth in the nation) and .856 on the penalty kill (89-for-104, 11th in the nation). The Gophers rank third in the NCAA in combined special teams while the program has not surrendered a power-play goal in five-straight games while the power play has scored in seven-straight contests and 10 of the last 12 games.

Sheehy Climbs the Record Book
Senior captain Tyler Sheehy currently ranks second among active NCAA skaters with 140 points (52 goals, 88 assists) in 139 career games while Sheehy now stands 37th all-time in scoring at the 'U'. The forward is averaging three points a game over the last four contests and has recorded points in 17 of the last 18 games for Minnesota. Sheehy, who is tied for the national lead with 20 power-play points this season, is also tied for 10th in NCAA scoring this year with 32 points. The Hobey Baker Award nominee recorded his third career four-point game last Saturday against Michigan (he has a pair of four-point games in the last four contests).

No Sophomore Slump for McManus
Sophomore forward Brannon McManus is continuing a breakout campaign for the Maroon & Gold as he enters this weekend's series on a career-long, eight-game point streak. Minnesota's first California native on roster in 30 years, McManus has already set new career highs with 11 goals, nine assists and 20 points this season (more than doubling his freshman point total from last season).

Notes and Anecdotes
With an assist last Saturday, senior defenseman Jack Sadek recorded his 12th point of the season, setting a new single-season career high...Minnesota's 91 points (29 goals, 62 assists) from its senior class rank fourth in the nation and second in the Big Ten behind Ohio State's 93...junior defenseman Ryan Zuhlsdorf enters the weekend having made 99 career appearances for the Gophers - the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect would be the ninth active Gopher to play in 100 career games and the second junior to do so after Rem Pitlick last weekend.

Against Penn State
Minnesota enters the weekend with a 15-10-0 all-time record against Penn State after splitting a pair of Big Ten games at 3M Arena at Mariucci earlier this season (2-4 loss, 4-1 win). The Gophers are 6-6-0 all-time at Pegula Ice Arena. Offensively, Rem Pitlick leads the Maroon & Gold against the Nittany Lions with 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) in 13 career games while Tyler Sheehy has 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 15 career games. Eric Schierhorn is 7-5-0 against Penn State while Mat Robson is 1-4-0.

Gophers Honor 1979 Team with 3MAM Record
Saturday. Jan. 26, 2019 was a night to celebrate for two reasons including the 40th anniversary celebration of the University of Minnesota's 1979 national championship squad. With members of the team being honored throughout the game, the Gophers set a new 3M Arena at Mariucci attendance record at 10,686. The crowd topped a 14-year old facility record of 10,587 fans from another Border Battle matchup between Minnesota and Wisconsin on Nov. 6, 2004.

Success in the Classroom
The spring semester starts last week (Jan. 22) at Minnesota, but the fall semester was unforgettable as the Gophers recorded the highest semester GPA in program history at 3.41 and the highest cumulative GPA in program history at 3.22 (as an athletic department, Minnesota followed suit with  school records of 3.25 cumulative GPA and a 3.25 semester GPA.

Schierhorn Nears School Record
Senior goaltender Eric Schierhorn (2-4-0) picked up his 12th career shutout last month as the two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year claimed sole possession of third all-time at Minnesota (only Adam Wilcox and Kellen Briggs have more with 13 each). With a 57-45-4 career record, Schierhorn ranks tied for sixth in school history in wins and sixth in saves at 2,579. Schierhorn has made 109 all-time appearances for the Maroon & Gold, fourth in program history behind only Adam Hauser (151), Kellen Briggs (132) and Adam Wilcox (115).

Minnesota Announces Captains for 2018-19
Four senior forwards will serve as leads for the University of Minnesota during the 2018-19 campaign with Tyler Sheehy and Brent Gates Jr. acting as captains for the Maroon & Gold while Jack Ramsey and Darian Romanko will act as assistant captains. Sheehy returns after serving as team captain as a junior last year while Gates, Ramsey and Romanko will wear letters for the first time as seniors. The four skaters continue a long tradition of Gopher Hockey captains dating back to the program's first season of play in 1921-22 when Chet Bros led the Maroon & Gold. Counting the new additions, 170 Gophers have worn a letter at the University of Minnesota in the program's 97-year history.

Gophers in the NHL Draft
Thirteen current Gophers have had their names called at the NHL Entry Draft including newcomers Robbie Stucker (2017, Columbus, Seventh Round, 210th), Sammy Walker (2017, Tampa Bay, Seventh Round, 200th), Blake McLaughlin (2018, Anaheim, Third Round, 79th) and Sampo Ranta (2018, Colorado, Third Round, 78th). Ranta and McLaughlin were selected with back-to-back picks in 2018 -- the sixth time in Gophers history that has happened. Ten NHL teams have prospects on the Gopher Hockey roster this year with Anaheim, Tampa Bay and Nashville each listing two draftees with Minnesota.

Mr. Hockey Goes to Minnesota
Incoming Gophers freshman Sammy Walker closed out his prep career by leading Edina High School to a third-place finish at the 2018 MSHSL Class AA State Tournament, earning all-tournament honors along with Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year accolades. Walker was also 34th recipient of the annual Mr. Hockey Award, given to the top senior high school boy's hockey player in the state of Minnesota. Of the 34 honorees in the award's history, 23 have gone on to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota.
