Gophers' Rally Falls Short Against Huskies

3/11/2019 1:38:00 AM | Baseball

Minnesota lost 7-5 after a late offensive surge,

The University of Minnesota (2-11) baseball team put on a late rally before falling to Washington 7-5 at the Seattle Baseball Showcase. The Golden Gophers scored four runs in the eighth inning and had two runners on base in the ninth. The Maroon and Gold had a weekend-best 13 hits on Sunday, including a 3-for-5 performance with a double and 2 RBIs for Ben Mezzenga. Easton Bertrand and Riley Smith each hit 2-for-4. Washington tallied 10 hits and eight walks.

Washington (8-4) got on the scoreboard early, going ahead 1-0 on a squeeze play in the first. The Huskies added three straight two-out singles to extend the lead to 3-0. Starter Joshua Culliver recovered with a 1-2-3 second inning before the Huskies tacked on a run in each of the next four innings to make it 7-1. The Gophers limited damage in the third and sixth inning by ending each with a double play. Culliver took the loss after allowing five runs, four of them earned, in three innings.

Mezzenga led off the game with a single, and Minnesota had one-out singles from Mezzenga and Eli Wilson in the third, but the Gophers did not capitalize on early baserunners until the fifth. Bertrand doubled off the right field wall and scored when Mezzenga hit a double of his own to left-center.

The Gophers rallied in the eighth after winning pitcher Josh Burgmann left the game in favor of Stevie Emanuels. Cole McDevitt singled and Jack Wassel and Smith walked to load the bases. With one out, Bertrand singled in a run and Jordan Kozicky doubled in two more. Mezzenga battled for an RBI groundout to make it 7-5.

Minnesota used seven pitchers in the showcase finale. A bullpen highlight at the end of the game was Gus Radel's relief appearance in the eighth in which he recorded three consecutive outs to strand two Washington base runners.

In the top of the ninth, Minnesota threatened again. Max Meyer notched a leadoff single. The next two Gophers were retired before Smith doubled to advance Meyer to third. Emanuels got a strikeout to seal the game for Washington.

The Gophers will conclude their road trip with a game at Seattle University on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT.

Minnesota Notes
*Wilson extended his on-base streak to 14 games.
*The Gophers will return to the West Coast next week to face Long Beach State and Pepperdine.
