Gophers Prepare for Conference Openers Against Rutgers, Maryland
3/13/2019 4:35:00 AM | Tennis
The Gophers jump into the midst of Big Ten play with a trip out east
The Golden Gophers' women's tennis team is set to kick off conference play after a dominating home sweep against Drake and Iowa State to wrap up non-conference action. The Maroon and Gold, now 7-6 on the year, enter Big Ten competition 0-1 after suffering a previous loss to neighboring rival, Wisconsin 4-3.
"It was a nice confidence boost to get a couple of non-conference wins at home last weekend against two tough opponents," head coach Catrina Thompson said.
Despite a lengthy road schedule as of late, the Gophers pack their bags to head east when they take on Rutgers (6-3, 1-1) and Maryland (3-7, 1-0) on Mar. 15 and Mar. 17 respectively. After a quick weekend trip to the coast, the Golden Gophers will return back home for a solo match against Indiana on Mar. 22 before hitting the road once again to take on No. 22 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Doubles
Cammy Frei and Caitlyn Merzbacher lead the way for the Gophers in doubles action with a staggering 7-2 dual record on the season. Following close behind, Tiffany Huber and Tina Kreinis have produced a 6-3 record as a tandem out of the middle spot. Both pairings produced undefeated records at home during their Saturday doubleheader.
Singles
Minnesota has witnessed the most change out of their singles lineup in recent matches. Bita Mancera headlines singles for the Gophers with a 10-2 dual record and has become the most consistent lineup piece for the Minnesota. However, the Gophers have also seen recent success from Frei in the No. 4 spot. Frei was an integral part of the Gophers' win against Iowa State as she clinched the team victory on a 7-0 third-set tiebreak.
What To Expect
Notoriously, the Big Ten conference has been home to top-tier competition with four teams in the top-40 based on ITA/Oracle Rankings. Regardless of their 0-3 road record, the Gophers look to capitalize on recent success across the lineup after getting back into the winning column. Additionally, despite Maryland struggling early, the Terps are a prime example of the strong level of play across the Big Ten with their recent win over Rutgers.
"Every match we play in the Big Ten is going to be against a quality team so we will have to be even more focused and disciplined especially as we hit the road for our next two matches," Thompson added.
