Minnesota Secures East Coast Sweep With Win Against Maryland

3/17/2019 4:02:00 PM | Tennis

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team swept their east coast competition after an impressive 6-1 win against the Maryland Terrapins. The Gophers move to 2-0 on the weekend and 9-6, 2-1 on the season.

"The girls did a great job responding today after we lost the doubles point and completely turning the match around," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "To pull off six singles wins on the road against a tough Maryland team shows how disciplined we played today and how tough our girls competed."

Doubles
Maryland forced and early lead in doubles after a decider from spot No. 2.  Despite jumping to a quick start from the top spot, the Gophers forced the doubles point to a third match after the tandem of Bita Mancera and Camila Vargas secured a win from No. 3. After falling early, the No. 2 combo of Tiffany Huber and Tina Kreinis tied things up 4-4 before falling in a 6-4 heartbreaker to the Terps giving them the 1-0 lead.

Singles
The Gophers kicked it into overdrive in singles play as they clinched the team win with six straight victories in solo draws. Kreinis tied things up quickly with a straight set 6-2, 6-2 defeat out of the top spot before Merzbacher gave the Gophers the 2-1 lead with the same score. Once the lead was secured, the Gophers never looked back as they swept Maryland across the board. Only two of the Gophers' matches on the day required an extra set which were both won in extraordinary fashion by Frei and Huber.

Up Next
Indiana awaits the Gophers in Minneapolis as they face off in a solo draw on Mar. 22 at 2:30pm before hitting the road for three straight matches. The Golden Gophers will get one of their toughest stretches yet as they meet up with No. 23 Michigan, No. 49 Penn State, and No. 13 Ohio State.

"Everyone did their job today, but now we have to get back to work this week and get ready for Indiana at home," Thompson added. "Always feels good traveling home with a couple of wins—especially in conference season."
