Gophers Win Third Consecutive Conference Match

Minnesota toppled Indiana to keep their perfect home season alive

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team added another conference win to their resume after downing the 11-7 Indiana Hoosiers 4-3 on home court. The Golden Gophers move to a 10-6, 3-1 record on the year after producing three consecutive Big Ten victories alongside a five-match win streak and perfect home record.

"The girls competed really well today and to get a 4-3 win against a tough Indiana team at home towards the end of our spring break was big for us," Catrina Thompson said. "We don't want to put ourselves into positions where we are down 1-0 so we have to clean some things up in doubles, but I'm proud of the way we competed."

Doubles
Identical to their match against Maryland last week, the Gophers dropped the doubles point after a three match decider from the top spot. Minnesota went up early after a quick 6-3 win from the tandem of Bita Mancera and River Hart before Indiana bounced back with a 6-4 victory from the No. 2 position. The Hoosiers eventually took the 1-0 lead after a tough 7-5 win over Cammy Frei and Caitlyn Merzbacher.

Singles
Keeping with a positive mentality, the Gophers rattled off four singles wins to clinch the team win and comeback victory for the Maroon and Gold. Merzbacher wasted no time tying up the match after a 6-0, 6-1 win from the No. 6 spot before Mancera pushed the Gophers ahead

"I think the thing that we took with us coming into singles against Indiana was that we were able to sweep and win all six singles against Maryland last weekend," Thompson added. "Confidence-wise, the girls just felt like they could come out in singles and get the job done."

Up Next
No. 24 Michigan is on the horizon as the Gophers wrap up their weekend of action on Mar. 24 at 10am CT. After a short trip to Ann Arbor, the Gophers will hit the road again as they take on Penn State on April 5 at 4pm CT followed by a match up on April 7 at 11am CT against Big Ten leader and No. 14 Ohio State.
