STARTING FIVE
• No. 10-seed Minnesota looks to advance to the round of 16 for just the fourth time in school history as the Gophers face a familiar foe in second-seeded Michigan State on Saturday. The Gophers are making their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance (excluding vacated seasons of 1994, 1995 and 1997).
• This is the first time that the Gophers have faced a fellow Big Ten Conference opponent in the NCAA Tournament, and the fifth neutral-site meeting with the Spartans (all previously coming at the Big Ten Tournament). It's the first Big Ten vs. Big Ten meeting in the NCAA Tournament since 2000 (Michigan State vs. Wisconsin, Final Four) and the eighth all-time.
• A pair of Gophers earned All-Big Ten honors, as senior forward Jordan Murphy was named to the first team (media) and second team (coaches), while junior guard Amir Coffey earned a spot on both panels' third team. It is the third straight season that the Gophers have earned an All-Big Ten honoree. Murphy was also named a NABC All-District performer on Thursday.
• Murphy, a two-time Big Ten Player of the Week, finished second in Big Ten play in rebounding, pulling down 10.8 boards per game, and leads in overall rebounding with 11.3 rebounds per game on the season, fifth in the nation. His 1,306 career rebounds ranks second in Big Ten Conference history. His 22 double-doubles is second in the nation. Murphy moved into sole possession of second place on the Gopher career scoring list on Thursday in the win over Louisville, now sitting with 1,802 career points.
• Coffey has averaged 21.7 points per game over his last six games, and is the team's leading scorer at 16.3 points per game. Coffey also leads the Gophers with 111 assists and second with 32 steals. Both Murphy and Coffey have started every game this season, along with freshman Gabe Kalscheur (10.3 ppg; leads team with 77 3-pointers).
