Gates Garners Big Ten Second Star of the Week

MINNEAPOLIS – Senior captain Brent Gates Jr. of the Gopher Hockey program has been tabbed the Big Ten Second Star of the Week after helping the Maroon & Gold close out the regular season with a sweep over Arizona State at 3M Arena at Mariucci.Â
A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Gates tied for the Big Ten lead with four points (one goal, three assists) over the weekend as the Gophers have now won three-straight games and five of the last six contests heading into the Big Ten playoffs. The forward scored a power-play goal and assisted on an even-strength tally in Friday's 5-1 win over the Sun Devils before picking up two assists (the opening goal just 42 seconds in and the final goal -- a shorthanded tally) in Saturday's 5-2 victory.Â
Saturday's win in the regular-season home finale pushed Minnesota to 9-0-2 on "Senior Night" in the last 11 seasons.Â
With four points this weekend, Gates set new single-season career highs at 30 points and 17 assists. In 145 career games, he has 84 points (42 goals, 42 assists.)Â

The Gophers will host Michigan in Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal action this weekend at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The best-of-three series opens on Friday, March 8 at 6:00 p.m. CT with the follow up on Saturday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m. CT. If necessary, the deciding game will be played on Sunday, March 10 at 4:30 p.m. CT. All three games will be broadcast live on FOX Sports North PLUS and FOX Sports Detroit PLUS.
