Gophers Lose Heartbreaker to San Diego

Minnesota gained a 5-4 lead in the seventh before losing 6-5 on bases-loaded walks.
Minnesota had six hits, four errors, and 10 men left on base. The Toreros (11-4) had seven hits and seven men left on, and struck out 13 Gopher batters. Eli Wilson was 2-for-5 with a double and a run, while extending his on-base streak to 13 games. Riley Smith went 1-for-2 with two run and two RBIs. Jake Miller was credited with the win for San Diego, and Nick Lackney was tabbed with the loss
San Diego went ahead 2-0 in the third inning. Adam Kerner walked and Connor Doyle followed him with a ground-rule double. Kerner scored on a sacrifice fly, and Doyle scored on an infield hit.
The Gophers tied it up in the next half inning. Smith was hit by pitch, then scored on Easton Bertrand's triple when two Torero outfielders collided. After Zack Raabe was hit by pitch, Bertrand stole home to tie the game as Raabe stole second.
The Toreros responded. Jeff Houghtby hit a double and made it to third on a fielding error. He scored on a grounder to make it 3-2. Starter Patrick Fredrickson stranded two runners with a strikeout to end the inning. Fredrickson would go 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, three earned runs, and four walks, and striking out three.
Minnesota again tied the game in the fifth. Cole McDevitt had an apparent double called back because of a timeout, but walked. Wilson singled, then Jack Wassel was hit by pitch to load the bases. Smith hit a grounder to plate McDevitt.
San Diego regained a one-run lead on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half of the inning, but the Gophers limited the damage. After the walk put the Toreros up 4-3, Lackney entered the game in relief and got a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
Minnesota's offense notched four of its hits in the seventh. Wilson led off with a double to right field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wassel. Smith hit a single to score Wilson and advanced on a single by Max Meyer. Andrew Wilhite doubled to left field to score Smith and give the Gophers a 5-4 lead.
Lackney pitched into the bottom of the eighth for Minnesota, with a scoreless sixth and seventh. San Diego started the eighth with a walk for Chris Colarossi and a single by Stephen Dubb. Adam Kerner's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners before Jake Stevenson entered the game. Stevenson struck out Connor Doyle, but Doyle reached first on a dropped third strike. Then Cody Jefferis walked to plate Colarossi and tie the game. Ripken Reyes struck out, but then Shane McGuire walked in the winning run. The game ended at that point because of a tournament rule that no new inning may start after a game has lasted 3 1/2 hours.
The Gophers will conclude the Seattle Baseball Classic against Washington on Sunday. The game is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT.
Gopher Notes:
*Minnesota started an all-Washington battery as both Fredrickson and Wilson are natives of the state.
*Zack Elliott made his first collegiate start at shortstop and walked twice.
