MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team posted its best round of the tournament to finish in sixth place out of 13 teams Sunday at the 43rd annual Rutherford Intercollegiate in State College, Pa.
Tied for seventh after 36 holes Saturday, the Golden Gophers shot a 6-over, 290 on Sunday to move up one spot and finish +26 at 878 for the tournament. It marked the sixth time in eight tournaments this season that the Gophers' best round came on the final day of competition.
Host-Penn State took home the team title with a 3-over score of 855 for 54 holes.
For the third time this season, freshman Lincoln Johnson was the top finisher for Minnesota. That number ranks second on the team behind only sophomore Angus Flanagan, who has done it five times. Johnson was 1-over Sunday with a 72, but still moved up five spots to end in a tie for 16th place with a 4-over 217. It was his second top-20 finish of the spring and his team-leading third of the season.
Johnson was nine strokes behind tournament winner Drake Hull from Connecticut. Hull was 5-under with a 208.
Sophomore Evan Long tied for 23rd as he finished 6-over for the tournament at 219. After a 1-over 72 in round one and two-over 73 in round two, Long finished Sunday with a 3-over 74.
A trio of Gophers tied for 42nd place as freshmen Harry Plowman-Ollington and Will Grevlos and sophomore Gus Minkin each ended with an 11-over 224.
Plowman-Ollington fired a 1-under 70 Sunday to tie his career-low round. Meanwhile, Grevlos and Minkin each posted a 3-over 74 as both enjoyed season-best finishes. Previously, Grevlos had a 52nd-place finish at the season-opening Gopher Invitational, while Minkin's best finish this year also came at the Gopher Invite where he tied for 44th.
Competing as an individual, junior Noah Rasinski tied for 59th with a 229, 16 shots over par. Rasinski was 6-over on Sunday with a 77.
Minnesota closes out the regular season next weekend, April 20-21, at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
