Three Matches Await Gophers for Senior Weekend
4/19/2019 6:22:00 PM | Tennis
After a split weekend at home against two nationally-ranked conference opponents the Gophers close out their regular season with three duals over the course of two days at Baseline Tennis Center. With two Big Ten rivals in Nebraska and Iowa in addition to a non-conference matchup with Green Bay, Minnesota looks to close out their season strong at home before the Big Ten Tournament in Lincoln, Neb.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN GOPHERS
After a tough, split weekend at home the Gophers conclude their regular season play against two conference rivals and a non-conference dual with Nebraska, Iowa, and Green Bay. Last weekend the Gophers edged out #29 Northwestern in a thriller before falling the next day in a 6-1 heartbreaker to #34 Illinois. Regardless of the 1-1 weekend at home, the Gophers saw many positives from their nationally-ranked opponents including Tina Kreinis upsetting the #39 singles player in the country, Camila Vargas clinching the Northwestern dual in a tiebreak, and Caitlyn Merzbacher getting back to her winning ways. Following Sunday's match against Green Bay the Gophers will honor their four graduating seniors: Annemarie Emme, Bita Mancera, Caitlyn Merzbacher, and Camila Vargas.
ABOUT THE HUSKERS
Nebraska failed to produce a winning record on the tough conference season as they sit just shy of the bottom only above Rutgers and Maryland. The Cornhuskers have struggled at closing matches out which gives the Gophers the key advantage coming off their ranked-win weekend. However, despite their struggles in recent matches, the Huskers have had plenty of matches turn their way late including a key 4-2 win over Iowa last weekend.
ABOUT THE HAWKEYES
Sitting just above the Gophers in conference rankings, the Hawkeyes have strung together a 12-9, 4-5 record on the rigourous year. Iowa enters the weekend coming off a loss to rival Nebraska in a 4-2 decider. Given the changing nature of rankings and the Big Ten Conference, the Iowa Hawkeyes present one of the toughest challenges for Minnesota on the weekend. Keep a close watch on Ashleigh Jacobs in the #3 or #4 singles spot who has dominated play for a 12-6 record. Additionally, the Hawkeyes have one of the toughest doubles lineups in the conference with the tandem of Ashleigh Jacobs/Cloe Ruette boasting a 5-1 record between the #2 and #3 spots.
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
Matches have not gone in favor of the Green Bay Phoenix this season as they have fallen into a 3-15, 0-8 record. Most recently, the Phoenix have suffered eight consecutive losses in conference play with a 2-7 record on the road. Green Bay has attempted previous shifts throughout the lineup which may play an integral role in how the Gophers choose to match up given that most Phoenix competitors have played in three spots throughout the year. Notably, Green Bay's typical #1 singles player Yasmin Glazbrook has fought to a 4-13 dual record on the season by way of 3-12 out of the top spot and 1-1 out of the #2 position. However, her twin sister Tiana has garnered a 1-1 record out of #1 while going 3-9 in her primary #2 lineup position.
Minnesota will begin competition with Nebraska on April 20 at 9am before a doubleheader on April 21 starting with Iowa at 10am and Green Bay at 5pm. The 'Senior Day' ceremony will take place after the conclusion of the match against Green Bay.
Live scoring will be available for both of this weekend's matches and can be accessed through the links provided above.
