No. 23 Indiana Claims Series over Gophers

4/28/2019 2:11:00 PM | Baseball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 23 Indiana jumped out to an early lead and held on against the Gopher Baseball team, taking the rubber match of their three-game Big Ten Conference series 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at Kaufman Field.

Joshua Culliver (2-4) could not escape the first inning for Minnesota (18-22, 8-7 Big Ten) , surrendering three runs on one hit but collected just two outs. He allowed three walks and hit a batter, but the Gopher defense did him little favor with an error. Cole Barr provided the biggest punch for No. 23 Indiana (30-14, 11-4 Big Ten), ripping a two-run double to left to get the scoring started.

The offense did not slow there, adding two on another Minnesota error in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Jack Wassel put the Gophers on the board with an RBI double in the top of the fourth, scoring Eli Wilson who walked earlier in the inning, but Indiana had an answer in the bottom of the frame as Scotty Bradley singled home Matt Gorski.

Left-hander Andrew Saalfrank (6-1) worked 6.2 innings, scattering six Minnesota hits while allowing just one earned and striking out six Gophers. Ben Mezzenga and Zack Raabe each contributed a pair of hits on the day, but the Maroon & Gold could not string enough offense together to complete the comeback.

NOTABLE
Ryan Duffy tossed a career-high 3.2 innings of relief for Minnesota, matching his career high of four strikeouts … Wilson walked twice but did not extend his season-long 10-game hitting streak in the game.

UP NEXT
Minnesota returns to Siebert Field to begin a 10-game homestand this Tuesday against North Dakota State. Single-game tickets remain available for all Gopher home games over the final stretch of the season. The Maroon & Gold walked off as 4-3 victors against the Bison on April 9 earlier this season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on campus.
