Minnesota Can't Overcome First Inning Deficit Against Milwaukee

MINNEAPOLIS — The Gopher Baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision against UW-Milwaukee at Siebert Field on Wednesday evening.
J.P. Massey (0-1) surrendered a pair of home runs in the first inning, and Minnesota trailed 5-0 before the home team had a chance to head to the plate. The Gophers loaded up the bases in both the first and second innings against Milwaukee (26-15), scraping across four runs against a pair of Panther pitchers. Cole McDevitt knocked in a run in each inning with an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly.
Bubba Horton tossed 3.0 innings out of the Minnesota bullpen, striking out five and keeping the Gophers hopes alive into the middle innings. The Maroon & Gold loaded the bases again in the bottom of the seventh when Jordan Kozicky nearly put the Gophers ahead with a near home run that instead bounced off the top of the wall for a single, but George Swedie worked out of the jam to keep Minnesota off the board.
Patrick Tomfohrde (1-0) earned the win for Milwaukee, striking out four in 1.2 innings. Matt Vanek threw 2.0 innings to earn his first save of the season.
NOTABLE
Easton Bertrand knocked in his 20th RBI of the season … Patrick Fredrickson returned to the mound in the sixth, throwing 2.0 shutout innings.
