Gophers Complete Weekend Sweep with 5-2 Win Over Indiana
4/7/2019 4:24:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team defeated Indiana 5-2 at home Sunday. The Gophers walked away with two wins on the weekend, breaking a four-match losing streak.
DOUBLES
Doubles for Minnesota was an up and down experience, as the two teams warmed up outside, then were forced indoors, then started play outdoors before the rain again forced the team indoors. Minnesota took advantage of their comfort on their home court and gained advantage over the Hoosiers. Josip Krstanovic and Sebastian Vile cleaned up in No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 win, while Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy won 6-3 in No. 1 doubles. Marino Alpeza and Stefan Milicevic were down 4-0 when play resumed indoors, but won five games in a row and were leading 5-4 upon clinch of the doubles point.
SINGLES
Stefan Milicevic sparked the energy inside Baseline Tennis Center with his clean 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles to give Minnesota 2-0 lead. Eli Ogilvy then lost a hard fought first set in No. 5 singles, but ultimately fell 7-6, 6-0. Josip Krstanovic lost a tough first set, but toppled Antonio Cembellin 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot, while Jackson Allen earned the clinch for the Gophers with his 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win in No. 4 singles.
Both Marino Alpeza and Sebastian Vile battled in three-set matches, with Alpeza winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 in No. 3 singles, while Sebastian Vile fell 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in No. 6 singles.
THE SPIN
Minnesota found just what they were looking for this weekend with back-to-back wins at home. The Gophers found their rhythm in both singles and doubles, and learned a lot about the themselves and the depth of their lineup. Krstanovic, Alpeza, and Allen all found themselves down after the first set, but were able to grind back and take the match, while Vile, a Freshman, battled hard in an almost three hour long match against a tough opponent in the No. 6 spot. Upcoming road battles will be important, but two wins at home will be key for momentum late in the season.
UP NEXT
Minnesota will hit the road to face Michigan on Saturday and Michigan State on Sunday, both at noon. This will be Minnesota's last road trip before tournament play.
