Pitching Shuts Down Maryland in Home Finale
5/12/2019 4:45:00 PM | Baseball
MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher Baseball team claimed a Big Ten Conference series win on the back of a dominant pitching performance, defeating Maryland 2-1 at Siebert Field in the team's 2019 home finale on Sunday afternoon.
Joshua Culliver (3-4) did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, a bloop single off the bat of Taylor Wright and just over the head of a leaping Gopher infielder. The right-hander tossed 5.2 shutout innings for Minnesota (24-24, 13-8 Big Ten), allowing just a pair of Maryland (24-27, 9-12 Big Ten) hits.
Ryan Duffy continued to put zeroes on the scoreboard for the Gophers, working 2.1 hitless innings with three punch outs to his day. A home run by Randy Bednar in the ninth broke up Minnesota's shutout, but Brett Schulze closed out the inning for his sixth save of the year.
Tyler Blohm (1-1) matched Culliver through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth after a ground-rule double by Jack Wassel and ended his day after 3.1 innings. Wassel came in to score the game's first run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Easton Bertrand, and Drew Hmielewski brought home Jordan Kozicky with an RBI single to finish the line for Blohm with two runs allowed, but just one earned after a passed ball.
SENIOR DAY
Minnesota honored its eight seniors following the home finale: Eduardo Estrada, Jr., Jeff Fasching, Nick Lackney, Cole McDevitt, Ben Mezzenga, Riley Smith, Jake Stevenson, and student assistant coach Ryan Goll. The 2019 senior class has enjoyed great success at Minnesota: two All-Big Ten honorees, an All-Region selection, and a combined 18 Academic All-Conference picks while owning a combined 139-82 record in the past four seasons. They won the Big Ten Regular Season and Conference Tournament Championships last season and led the Gophers to their first ever NCAA Super Regional in 2018.
NOTABLE
Zack Raabe continued his team-leading six-game hitting streak with a double in the first … Minnesota reached an even .500 record for the first time since the second game of the 2019 season.
UP NEXT
Minnesota concludes the Big Ten regular season next weekend at Northwestern. The Gophers and Wildcats will open their three-game series Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Evanston, Illinois.
