EVANSTON, Ill. – The Gopher Baseball team stumbled Friday as Northwestern evened their Big Ten Conference series at a game apiece, taking game two 10-3 after a runaway seven-run fifth inning at Miller Park.
Freshman Zack Raabe went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, driving in a run in the ninth inning, but his offensive output would not be enough to push Minnesota (25-26, 14-9 Big Ten) to a third-straight victory.
Sophomore Ryan Duffy (0-2) made his first start for the Gophers, working in and out of trouble in the first four innings but surrendering three runs, including a home run, before heading out for the fifth in the longest outing of his career. Duffy left with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth, and Northwestern (24-26, 11-12 Big Ten) would get a bases-clearing double in the inning from both Casey O'Laughlin and Shawn Goosenberg to eventually plate seven runs in the inning.
Mike Doherty (5-1) held the Maroon & Gold scoreless on four hits through six innings before Jack Wassel clubbed his second home run of the weekend and fourth of the season leading off the seventh, putting Minnesota on the board. A bases loaded walk drawn by Eduardo Estrada, Jr. later in the inning brought home another run. Doherty finished his day with 6.1 innings pitched, six hits allowed and five strikeouts with just the two runs allowed.
Raabe's second double of the day scored Chase Stanke in the ninth, but the Gophers would get no closer on the day.
NOTABLE
Raabe hit a first inning double for the second-straight game to extend his hitting streak to eight games … Chicago native J.P. Massey struck out the first four batters he faced in his return to his home state, finishing with five in 3.0 hitless, shutout innings … Ben Mezzenga went 2-for-5 in his return to the line-up, playing in his first game since May 4.
