Gophers Wrap Up NCAA West Prelim

Minnesota closed out competition at the NCAA West Preliminary with nine NCAA Championship qualifiers.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Tess Keyzers and Bethany Hasz rounded out Minnesota's NCAA Championship qualifiers on the third and final day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium on Saturday. The Maroon & Gold wrapped up the meet with nine athletes advancing to the national meet in Austin, Texas, in June.

Keyzers used a Minnesota program record throw of 17.27 meters (56-08 ft.) to place fifth in the shot put at the West Preliminary and punch her ticket to the national meet in her NCAA debut; she improved on the previous program record ofĀ 16.89 meters (55-05) held by teammate Kiley Sabin since 2018. Meanwhile, Sabin wrapped up her collegiate career with a 19th-place showing in shot put (15.92 meters, 52-02.75 ft.) after also placingĀ 30th in discus at the meet.

B. Hasz rounded out the Gophers' NCAA Championship qualifiers, extending her season in the 5,000-meter run. She posted a time of 15:47.72 to place fourth in heat two and secure one of five automatic-qualifying spots in the heat; her time landed her 12th overall at the meet. Patty O'Brien also capped off her collegiate career in the race, finishing 39th overall in 16:46.99.

Additionally, Lorean Murray also represented the Gophers on Saturday, landing a 23rd-place finish in triple jump with a mark of 12.59 meters (41-03.75 ft.) to close out her sophomore season.Ā 

On the men's side, Jonathan TharaldsenĀ led the Maroon & Gold on the final day of competition at Hornet Stadium, finishing 13th in the men's shot put at 18.87 meters (61-11 ft.). Sammie Houston also posted a 30th-place performance in the men's triple jump at 14.93 meters (48-11.75 ft.) while Owen Hoeft wrapped up the meet for the Gophers with a 41st-place performance in the men's 5,000 meters at 14:34.36.Ā

Nine Gophers are set to represent the Maroon & Gold at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas. The national meet runs Wednesday, June 5 through Saturday, June 8.
