Nine Gophers Set for NCAA Track & Field Championships

The men's competition is set for Wednesday and Friday while the women compete Thursday and Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track & field program will send nine competitors to the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week in Austin, Texas. The four-day meet runs Wednesday, June 5 through Saturday, June 8 with men's action on Wednesday and Friday and women's competition on Thursday and Saturday at Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Representing the Maroon & Gold at the national championships will be Obsa Ali (men's 3,000 meter steeplechase), Alec Basten (men's 3,000 meter steeplechase), Bethany Hasz (women's 5,000 meters), Megan Hasz (women's 10,000 meters), Tess Keyzers (women's shot put), Kieran McKeag (men's hammer throw), Temi Ogunrinde (women's hammer throw), Rachel Schow (women's 400-meter hurdles) and Amira Young (women's 100 meters).
Men's Hammer Throw Preview (Kieran McKeag)

Kieran McKeag makes his second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the Maroon & Gold after finishing 21st in the men's hammer throw in 2018 -- earning Honorable Mention All-America accolades. The redshirt sophomore, who also earned Second Team All-America honors during the indoor season this year in the men's weight throw, is seeded 19th in the hammer throw after throwing 66.20 meters (217-02 ft.) at the NCAA West Preliminary last month. A native of Lakeville, Minn., McKeag ranks third in program history after clearing 68.01 meters (223-01 ft.) at the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Men's 3,000 Meter Steeplechase Preview (Obsa Ali, Alec Basten)

The fastest two men's 3,000 meter steeplechase competitors in University of Minnesota history will go head to head this week as Obsa Ali and Alec Basten face off in Texas. Ali enters the competition as the defending NCAA champion, the two-time defending Big Ten champion and a two-time All-American in the discipline (also earned All-America accolades in the 5,000 meters during the 2019 indoor season) -- the redshirt senior is seeded second heading into the competition after running 8:34.16 to win the NCAA West Prelim for the second year in a row. A native of Richfield, Minn., Ali broke his own school record in the steeplechase earlier this year by running 8:31.15 at the Payton Jordan Invite. Meanwhile, Basten is set for his NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships debut after moving up to second all-time behind Ali on the school's all-time performers list at 8:34.50 -- a mark the redshirt sophomore set in a runner-up performance at the NCAA West Preliminary. A native of Green Bay, Wis., Basten is seeded third in the steeplechase and was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection for the second year in a row last week.
Women's Hammer Throw Preview (Temi Ogunrinde)

Temi Ogunrinde returns to the NCAA Championships for her third-straight appearance in hammer throw after placing 18th in 2017 and ninth in 2018. She enters the national meet seeded fourth with a mark of 64.46 meters (211-06 ft.), which earned her a runner-up finish at the NCAA West Prelim. Ogunrinde won her third-straight Big Ten title in hammer throw this spring with a season-best mark of 67.42 meters (221-02 ft.) to become the first individual to three-peat as Big Ten women's hammer throw champion; her performance set a new B1G meet record in the event and earned her All-Big Ten First Team honors. The Cottage Grove, Minn., native owns the nation's seventh-best mark in hammer throw this season. She also holds Minnesota's program record at 67.45 meters (221-03 ft.), a mark set during the 2018 season. Ogunrinde is one of nine Gophers in program history to advance to the NCAA meet in hammer throw and is the first three-time qualifier in hammer throw for the Maroon & Gold. An Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Ogunrinde completed her undergraduate degree in Entrepreneurial Management is currently working on her Masters of Public Policy.
Women's 100 Meters Preview (Amira Young)

An All-Big Ten Second Team honoree as B1G 100-meter runner up this spring, Amira Young is set to make her NCAA Championships debut. She punched her ticket to the national meet with an 11th-place finish in the 100m at the NCAA West Prelim, where she ran a career-best time of 11.37 seconds to tie the Minnesota program record in the event. Young, a freshman from Chicago, Ill., has made her mark on the Minnesota record book in her rookie season, also landing third all-time in the 200-meter dash at 23.59 seconds. She is Minnesota's second-ever NCAA qualifier in the 100m-meter dash and the first since fellow 100-meter record-holder Tahesia Harrigan placed 10th in 2002.
Women's 400-Meter Hurdles Preview (Rachel Schow)

Rachel Schow returns to the NCAA Championships in an individual event after helping the Maroon & Gold's outdoor 4x400-meter relay team to a 14th-place finish in 2018. She becomes just the third Gopher in program history to advance to the national meet in the 400-meter hurdles, joining Emma Spagnola (seventh in 2018) and Gretchen Otto (11th in 1990). Schow punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships by placing 12th in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA West Prelim with a career-best time of 57.47 seconds, good for second in Minnesota history. She enters the meet seeded 22nd in the field. Earlier this season, Schow placed fifth in the 100m hurdles (13.72), seventh in the 4x400m relay (3:41.09), and ninth in the 400m hurdles (59.78) at the Big Ten Championship. A native of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and an Electrical Engineering major, Schow was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team this season as well.
Women's Shot Put Preview (Tess Keyzers)

A native of Little Chute, Wis., Tess Keyzers is set to make her NCAA Championships debut to cap off an outstanding redshirt freshman season for the Gophers. Keyzers advanced to the national meet with a fifth-place finish in shot put at the NCAA West Prelim, where she recorded a career-best mark of 17.27 meters (56-08.00) and set a new Minnesota program record. She enters the NCAA meet seeded seventh and owns the nation's 11th-best mark this season. Keyzers placed fourth in shot put at the Big Ten Championship after finishing as B1G shot put runner-up during the indoor season. The Physiology major earned Academic All-Big Ten honors this season as well. Keyzers becomes the eighth Gopher in program history to earn an NCAA Championships appearance in shot put, historically one of Minnesota's strongest events; Keyzers' NCAA berth marks the 27th time a Gopher has advanced to the national meet in the event.

Megan Hasz will make her NCAA Track & Field Championships debut in the 10,000-meter run as the seventh Gopher in program history advance to the national meet in the event; most recently, Liz Berkholtz finished 22nd in 2016. M. Hasz landed her spot at the NCAA Championship with an 11th-place finish in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA West Prelim, and she enters the race seeded 21st overall. Earlier this season, M. Hasz set a new Minnesota program record in the event at the Stanford Invitational with a career-best time of 33:09.57, which is good for 16th in the nation this season. The Alexandria, Minn., native also finished as Big Ten runner-up in the 10,000-meter run to pick up All-Big Ten Second Team honors. A Kinesiology major, she was named a CoSIDA Academic All District and Academic All-Big Ten honoree as well.
Women's 5,000 Meters Preview (Bethany Hasz)

Bethany Hasz is set for her NCAA Track & Field Championships debut in the 5,000-meter run. She secured her spot at the national meet by posting a time of 15:47.72 to place fourth in her heat and secure one of five automatic-qualifying spots; her time landed her 12th overall at the NCAA West Prelim. B. Hasz has already improved on her own Minnesota program record in the 5,000-meter run this season, clocking a career-best mark of 15:45.72 at the Stanford Invitational; she also finished third in the Big Ten in the event. The Alexandria, Minn., native owns the nation's 18th-best 5,000-meter mark this season and enters the meet seeded 11th in the field. She is the third Gopher in program history to represent the Maroon & Gold in the outdoor 5,000-meters at the NCAA meet, joining Laura Docherty (18th in 2013) and Lori Townsend (sixth in 1995). A Kinesiology major, B. Hasz is a CoSIDA Academic All District and Academic All-Big Ten honoree as well.

Six School Record-holders Head to Austin
All nine Maroon & Gold competitors heading to the NCAA championships this week rank among the top-10 all-time performers in Gophers history in their respective events including six school record holders -- Obsa Ali in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:31.15), Bethany Hasz in the women's 5,000 meters (15:45.72), Megan Hasz in the women's 10,000 meters (33:09.57), Tess Keyzers in the women's shot put (17.27 meters, 56-08.00 ft.), Temi Ogunrinde in the women's hammer throw (67.45 meters, 221-03 ft.) and Amira Young in the women's 100 meters (11.37, tied for first in school history). Of the remaining three competitors, Alec Basten ranks second in program history in the men's steeplechase behind Ali (8:34.50), Rachel Schow is second in the women's 400-meter hurdles (57.47) and Kieran McKeag ranks third in the men's hammer throw (68.01 meters, 223-01 ft.). Eight of the nine marks took place during the 2019 outdoor campaign.
Obsa Ali Looks to Add to Legacy
Obsa Ali became the first University of Minnesota runner to earn a national championship in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase last season -- now he'll look to become the first Gopher to win multiple NCAA crowns in over 70 years. A repeat performance from Ali would mark just the third time in Gophers history that a student-athlete has won multiple national championships -- Jack DeField won back-to-back NCAA men's pole vault titles in 1942 and 1943 while Fortune Gordien won three-straight NCAA men's discus titles in 1946, 1947 and 1948. Gordien, who went on to compete in three Olympics and set four world records in the discus, also captained the Maroon & Gold to the program's only national title in 1948.
2019 NCAA Indoor Championships Rewind
Four Gophers represented the Maroon & Gold at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, and all four earned Second Team All-America accolades. Kieran McKeag (12th in men's weight throw), Kiley Sabin (14th in women's shot put), Jonathan Tharaldsen (14th in men's shot put), and Obsa Ali (15th in men's 5,000 meters) represented Minnesota at the national meet.
Gophers Name Captains
Matthew Rosen, Teddy Frid, Jackson Wellenstein, Jonathan Tharaldsen, Evan Ferlic, Temi Ogunrinde, Kiley Sabin, Rachel Schow, and Patty O'Brien are leading the Gophers as captains this season. Ogunrinde returns to the team's leadership corps after serving as a captain last season while O'Brien and Ferlic continue their captaincy after leading the Gopher cross country squad this fall.
Gophers Celebrate Track & Field Stadium Grand Opening
The University of Minnesota and Gopher Athletics celebrated a new era of track & field with the grand opening of the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium on Monday, Sept. 17. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, this facility will become synonymous with track & field excellence in the Midwest. It will not only provide a first-class experience for the Gophers, but it will also provide a wonderful venue for the state's largest amateur meets and a Minnesota option for USA Track & Field to place its marquee events in the Upper Midwest.
The University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium gives Minnesota its first opportunity in more than 15 years to host home outdoor meets, including Big Ten and NCAA competition. The facility features a nine-lane track with the Beynon 2000 surface, full-field event hosting capabilities, versatile configuration, fully enclosed, heated warm-up and cool down areas, and grandstands with the capacity to host major competitions.
