OXFORD, Miss. – The Minnesota soccer team fell to Ole Miss 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in Oxford, Mississippi after a goal in the 109th minute ended the match in the Rebels' favor.
Last season the Gophers got the best of the matchup when they left the game victorious with a goal in the 109th minute.
The Maroon and Gold held a 2-0 advantage by the 31st minute but the Rebels scored the final three goals including the golden goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match. Both Gophers goals were the first of the season for Haley Hartkemeyer and Megan Gray respectively.
The Gophers got on board with their earliest goal of the season when Hartkemeyer got the ball in the box, cut right, and perfectly placed the ball in the 7th minute. Midfielder Athena Kuehn assisted Hartkemeyer on the opening score.
Minnesota tacked on another goal in the first half when Gray made a great run to the goal and secured her on rebound off the post before tapping it back into the net. Out of Gray's four career goals, two have come against Ole Miss with one today and the other a game-winner last season at home.
Goalkeeeper Maddie Nielsen continued to shine in the net as she made five saves and directed a backline that was under attack throughout the match.
The Gophers have now played three extra time games and finished all of them with a draw. With a 1-1 tie on Thursday night against Arkansas, the Gophers finish their trip to the Rebel Classic with a pair of draws.
Ole Miss scored only two minutes after Gray's goal and then tied the game up in the 80th minute after applying pressure throughout the second half.
Minnesota returns to Minneapolis and is set to open their home schedule against Marquette on Thursday Sept. 5.
