Gophers Upset No.14 NC State for First Victory

MINNEAPOLIS - The Gophers defeated No. 14 North Carolina State for the first time in program history and also took home their first victory of the 2019 season with a 1-0 victory on a rainy Thursday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
"We've played really well and our results so far this season don't reflect the effort, but today we showed we can earn that collective win," goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen said.
Defender Athena Kuehn scored the lone goal of the game with a header in the 57th that followed a Gophers corner kick. Freshman Katie Duong earned her first career points with the assist to Kuehn's goal.
Nielsen once again shown bright in the net with seven goals and her first shutout of the season after notching nine last season. With those seven saves, Nielsen now has over 30 saves on the young season.
As a team the Gophers stepped up in the second half with four more shots and two more corner kicks than the first stanza. Even Nielsen stepped up in the second half with four of her seven saves.
With their ranked victory, the Gophers put their place in the win column for the first time this year before the nonconference season comes to a close. The Gophers now prepare for South Dakota State to come to the Twin Cities on Sunday.

In addition to the assist, Duong was one of the most productive Gophers on the wet field. Duong launched four shots, two of which landed on target.Way to use your head, Athena! 👍 pic.twitter.com/TWx21OCJIl
