MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team captured its first team title in over five years and junior Angus Flanagan won his second career individual title as the Gophers dominated the field at the Macdonald Cup in New Haven, Conn.
Minnesota shot a 1-over 281 Sunday to finish with a 10-under 830 (274-275-281). That gave the Gophers a 24-stroke victory over second-place Princeton as they won their first team title since the 2014 Big Ten Championships. The 830 was the team's lowest 54-hole score since at least the 2000-01 season, while the 10-under par score was the team's lowest score to par since going 17-under at the 2016 Alister Mackenzie Invitationall.
"I just love to see these guys be rewarded for all their hard work and preparation," first-year head coach Justin Smith said. "This team has set its mind to raising the bar each and every day. I am so proud of their attitudes, as much as anything."
Six golfers were in action for each time with the top four scores counting. To illustrate the team's dominance, all six Minnesota golfers finished in the top 25.
Leading the way was Flanagan, who was the tournament medalist for the second time in his career after also doing so at last year's Big Ten Championship. He shot a 2-under 68 Sunday to finish 6-under at 204 for the tournament, setting a career best score for 54-holes and matching a career best for tournament score to par.
Flanagan birdied No. 3 but bogeyed holes five and six to make the turn at 1-over. He fared much better on the back nine with a birdie on No. 11 and consecutive birdies on 16-17 to hold off teammate Evan Long, who finished in second at 3-under.
Long's second-place finish was the best of his career, as was his 54-hole score of 207 and his 3-under finish to par. He shot a 1-over 71 Sunday. It's the first time that the Gophers had golfers finish first and second in the same tournament since Riley Johnson and Daniel Luftspring did it at the 2015 Dartmouth Dual.
Like Long, Connor Glynn also posted the best finish of his career as he tied for fifth. He carded a 2-over-72 in the final round to finish at 211, 1-over-par for the tournament. He had two birdies in a four-hole stretch to sit at 1-under through eight holes, but he fell into the black with a triple on No. 9. He then played even-par golf on the back nine.
Senior Thomas Longbella was one stroke back of Glynn with a 2-over 212. His 2-over 72 on Sunday saw him play 2-over on the front nine, but even-par on the back nine.
Fellow senior Noah Rasinski became the third Gopher to record a career best finish as he tied for 13th, better his previous best finish of 24th which he set earlier this season at the Gopher Invitational. His 1-over 71 Sunday gave him a 7-over 217 for the tournament, finishing one stroke better than his previous best 54-hole score of 218.
Freshman Harrison Arnold rounded out the Gophers' squad by tying for 25th. His 71 in the final round was a career-low score, while his 54-hole score of 220 matched a career best. Two-over at the turn, he birdied No. 16 to log the best score of his young collegiate career.
Minnesota will look to build on this weekend's success when it's back in action next week at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate, Oct. 7-8, in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
