Gophers Shine on Beam En Route to Win

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The No. 6 University of Minnesota gymnastics team put on a spectacular performance at the Rutgers quad meet, posting a team score of 196.875 to take first place overall.

The Gophers competed bars, beam, floor, vault in their first quad meet of the season, and ended up sweeping the podium on three out of the four events.

Minnesota's best team score came on beam when they put up a 49.700, a new program record. The team's next best score was on floor (49.275).Minnesota moves to 3-1 overall and is now 1-0 in the Big Ten.


Notable
Lexy Ramler became the third Gopher in program history to score a perfect 10 on the beam, joining Ivy Lu and former Gopher, Hanna Nordquist. This was Ramler's first perfect 10 of her collegiate career.

"We are so proud of this team tonight," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "Our goal was to get better from last weekend, and we made some really good improvements. Floor saw a big improvement from last week's meet. Beam was absolutely outstanding, we were on fire tonight. Every athlete went up there and nailed their routines. For Lexy [Ramler] to score a 10 was a long time coming. She has done a lot of 10-worthy routines in her life. We are so happy for her" Hansen added.

All-Around
Ramler won the all-around with a score of 39.550. The junior finished in the top-3 on each event, including earning the beam title. Ona Loper came in second in the all-around, posting a new career-high score of 39.500. Loper took first on floor (9.900) and vault (9.925).

Event Breakdown
Bars
On their first event of the afternoon, Minnesota posted a team score of 48.875. The Gophers were led off by Kristen Quaglia who scored a 9.750 on a strong routine. Lexy Ramler posted the highest score on the event for Minnesota with a 9.850. Ona Loper followed Ramler with a 9.800, while Tiarre Sales put up a 9.775 and Hannah Willmarth scored a 9.700.

Beam
History was made on beam as the Gophers etched their names into the record books, both as a team and individuals. As a team, Minnesota set a new team beam record of 49.700, moving into first place all time. Four Gophers scored a 9.900 or higher, with the lowest score being only a 9.850.

Ramler notched a perfect 10 on the event and the first of her collegiate career. She became only the third Gopher to accomplish this feat. 

Mary Korlin-Downs also accomplished a huge feat during the rotation, setting a new career-high with a score of 9.900. Tiarre Sales also set a career-high when she put up an outstanding score of 9.975. Ivy Lu ended the meet with a third place finish on the event with a score of 9.950. 

Floor
Minnesota's team score on floor was a 49.275. Every Gopher in the floor lineup scored a 9.8 or higher. Kaitlyn Higgins led off on the event and set up the Gophers nicely with a 9.825. Loper's score of 9.900 put her in first place on the event. Ramler and Paige Williams tied for second on the event with a pair of 9.875s. 

Vault
Minnesota swept the top three spots on vault, which was led by Loper's score of 9.295. In second place was Maddie Quarles (9.875), with Ramler coming in at third (9.825).

Up Next
The Gophers return home on Jan. 25 as they host Illinois in their home opener. The meet will begin at 6 PM and will be available on BTN+.
