No. 7 Minnesota Welcomes Illinois to Maturi Pavilion

The No. 7 University of Minnesota Women's gymnastics team returns to Maturi Pavilion this Saturday for their home opener. The Gophers are set to take on No. 17 Illinois at 6 p.m. The meet can be streamed on BTN + with a subscription.

Last time out
At their first quad meet of the season, hosted by Rutgers, the Gophers secured a first place finish with a team score of 196.874. The team improved upon their season-opening score by .400.

Minnesota had 12 podium finishes this past weekend and swept the podium on floor, vault and beam. Lexy Ramler finished first in the all-around, while Ona Loper earned a second place finish after posting a career-high 39.500. 

Gophers in the Polls
Minnesota comes in at No. 7 overall, dropping one spot since being ranked sixth during week two.

For the first time in program history, the Gophers are first in the nation on beam. The second-highest ranking the Gophers have held on this event was third back in 1999 (week 1). They are eighth on vault, 16th on the uneven bars and 14th on floor.

Ramler is ranked No. 5 in the all-around, No. 1 on beam and No.16 on bars. Tiarre Sales (T-3) and Ivy Lu (T-19) join Ramler in the beam rankings. After winning the floor and vault titles at the Rutgers quad meet, Loper is ranked No. 14 in the all-around and No. 12 on vault. Maddie Quarles checks in at No. 8 on vault.

B1G Rankings
Currently the Gophers are ranked third in the Big Ten with a 4-1-0 record. Maryland and Michigan are tied for first with a record of 3-0-0. According to season averages and team all-around totals, Minnesota leads all Big Ten schools.

Beam Queens
The Maroon and Gold set a new program record on beam with a score of 49.700. The record was previously held by the 2016 team who tallied a 49.675 at the Big Ten Qualifiers.

Ali Sonier led-off the lineup with a solid 9.850, and was followed up by a 9.950 from Lu and a 9.875 from Loper. Sitting in the four-spot, Mary Korlin-Downs set a new career-high after going 9.900. The career-highs continued when Sales recorded a 9.975, and Ramler scored her first ever, and the programs third, perfect 10 on the event.

Lu and Sales each received one 10.000 from a judge on the event.

Record Setting Gophers
Minnesota posted their best opening meet team score since women's gymnastics became an NCAA sport in 1982, recording 196.475 points at Denver. 

The Gophers' No. 6 overall ranking during week two was their second highest team ranking since coming in at No. 4 in 1998 (week 1) and 2000 (week 1). 

Their current ranking is the team's third highest ranking achieved. The last time Minnesota came in at No. 7 overall was during the 1998 (week 2), 1999 (week 4) and 2002 (week 1) seasons.

Ramler became the third Gopher in program history to record a perfect 10 on beam at the Rutgers quad meet. She joins current teammate, Lu, and former Gopher, Hanna Nordquist, to accomplish this

Scouting Illinois
No. 17 Illinois  enters the meet with a 4-1 overall record and is 0-1 in the Big Ten. the Fighting Illini fell to reigning Big Ten Champion Michigan 196.700 - 195.650. After three meets, Illinois is sitting at No. 6 in the Big Ten.

Freshman Mia Takekawa is currently tied for 16th in the all-around and tied for sixth on beam. Earlier this season, she recorded Illinois' first perfect 10 on beam. Arayah Simons, also a freshman, is tied for 22nd on floor.

Meet Promotions
Pink Meet
The Gophers are hosting their "Always Dreaming"/Pink meet on Saturday. Fans who bring in Legos, card games/decks of cards and baby rattles to the ticket office on the day of the meet will receive discounted admission. Fans who bring in select donations will also receive a raffle ticket to be entered in to win a Minnesota warm-up leotard. All donations will be given to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. The Gophers invite fans to wear pink.

Superhero night
Fans are invited to dress up as their favorite superhero for the meet.

Goldy's Kids Club
Join your Gophers for an event filled with fun activities for all members in attendance. Parents in attendance will also receive discounted admission.

Gophers at 2019 Baton Rouge Regional
The Gophers fell just short of making it to the 2019 National Championships, coming in third place.. Minnesota (196.900) finished behind host LSU (197.500) and second-place Utah (197.250) in the Baton Rouge Regional Final. Minnesota put up solid scores on beam (49.400), bars (49.275), vault (49.125) and floor (49.125) to knock-off Auburn.

Up Next
Minnesota will travel to Ohio State on Feb. 1 for their third away meet of the season. The Gophers and Buckeyes will square-off at 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET). Minnesota will then return home for back-to-back meets against Iowa (Feb. 8) and Nebraska (Feb. 16).
