Gophers to Host Jack Johnson Classic

Minnesota returns to action on campus by hosting the Jack Johnson Classic this Friday and Saturday.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 9 Gopher women and No. 19 Gopher men return to action at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse this weekend, hosting the Jack Johnson Classic this Friday and Saturday.
About the 2020 Jack Johnson Classic
The Gophers are pleased to host the annual Jack Johnson Classic this Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. Friday's action begins at 2:30 p.m. CT and includes the heptathlon, pentathlon, and women's pole vault while Saturday's full day of competition kicks off at 10:30 a.m. CT with men's weight throw and the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. Admission to the meet is free. General parking is available in the University Ave. Ramp, the Washington Ave. Ramp, Lot 37 off 5th Street SE, and the Maroon Lot on Oak Street SE.
2019 Jack Johnson Classic Rewind
The Gophers won six event titles, including five for the men and one for the women, a year ago at the Jack Johnson Classic. Jonathan Tharaldsen (shot put) and Kieran McKeag (weight throw) swept the throwing events on the men's side while Kiley Sabin set a new Jack Johnson Classic meet record in women's shot put for the win. The Gopher men also found success in the horizontal jumps with wins by James Travis (triple jump) and Mason Roomes (long jump). Eric Walker added a title in the 60-meter hurdles as well. In addition, five Gophers won their respective events while competing unattached: Hannah Hood-Blaxill (high jump), Kaitlyn Long (weight throw), Kayla Vogt (400 meters), Ayesha Champagnie (pentathlon), and Teddy Frid (heptathlon).

The Gophers returned from Kentucky with six event titles: Abby Kohut-Jackson, women's mile; Sophie Schmitz, women's 800 meters' Devia Brown, women's shot put; Anastasia Korzenowski, Kelli Schmidt, Sophie Schmitz, Tate Sweeney, women's distance medley relay; Jonathan Tharaldsen, men's shot put; and Sammie Houston, men's triple jump. On the men's side, Alec Basten, Kieran McKeag, Jackson Wellenstein, Teddy Frid, and Jonathan Tharaldsen will lead the squad in 2020 while Rachel Schow, Ayesha Champagnie, Erin Huls, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Ryan Crotty, and Val Larson will serve as captains on the women's side.

The Gophers wrapped up the 2019 track & field season with six All-Americans at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships led by two First Team All-Americans in Obsa Ali (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw). Second Team All-America nods went to Alec Basten (3,000-meter steeplechase), Bethany Hasz (5,000-meter run), Tess Keyzers (shot put), and Kieran McKeag (hammer throw). The Minnesota women finished fifth at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships while the men came in eighth in the team standings.

The Gopher women check in at No. 9 in the country while the Minnesota men climbed 10 places to No. 19 in the nation according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) week one NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Indoor Records Fall
The Gopher women have already set all-time top-10 marks in seven events this season, led by Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz both breaking Minnesota's previous program record in the 5,000-meter run and Amira Young setting a new record in the 200 meters. Meanwhile, the Gopher men have set all-time top-10 marks in seven events this season.

Next weekend, the Gophers will split the squad at a pair of meets, competing at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame and the Ted Nelson Classic hosted by Minnesota State.
