MINNEAPOLIS – Day one of the Tennessee Diving Invitational wrapped up Friday afternoon, as Minnesota sophomore Joy Zhu claimed first place in the women's 1-meter springboard competition.
Out of 51 divers partaking in preliminaries, Zhu posted the top score (297.35) to advance to the afternoon finals session alongside teammate Jaclynn Fowler, who placed fourth (269.20) in prelims. Zhu dominated yet again throughout the finals, finishing with a score of 313.55 to claim the top spot in the event.
Friday's victory marks the fifth total first place finish of Zhu's young career, with 2019-20 representing the first campaign the Wuhan, China native has competed at the NCAA level. Earlier this season, Zhu swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the Minnesota Invite, as well as Minnesota's Nov. 8 dual against Wisconsin.
Fowler also performed exceptionally well in the afternoon session, with her score of 272.20 good for a fourth place finish on the day.
Competition is set to pick back up on Saturday morning, with the women's 3-meter prelims scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CST and finals beginning at roughly 1:25 p.m. CST. On the men's side, 1-meter prelims are penciled in for a 10:30 a.m. CST start, with the finals session taking place around 12:35 p.m. CST.
