Minnesota Primed for B1G Weekend After Day One

1/31/2020 9:08:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – After day one of their Big Ten Conference triple dual, the Gopher women lead both Purdue (130-75) and Northwestern (112-93), while the men find themselves in a split against the Boilermakers (103-102) and Wildcats (94-111).
Ā
Four Gophers posted individual first place finishes for the U on Friday night in Abbey Kilgallon, Lindsey Kozelsky, Jordan McGinty and Max McHugh.

Ā
After beginning the evening with a second place result from Emily Cook, Kozelsky, Tevyn Waddell and Grace Bennin in the 200 medley relay (1:41.04), the Gophers received a first place finish in the 1000 freestyle (10:04.68) from Kilgallon. Completing the event behind Kilgallon was Abbey Erwin, who touched second with a time of 10:09.83 to make it a one-two finish for the U.
Ā
Minnesota did not have to wait long for their next victory of the night, as McGinty claimed the top spot in the very next event. McGinty's time of 1:50.20 was good for first place in the 200 free, putting her just ahead of sophomore Kate Sullivan, who finished third (1:50.45).
Ā
The Maroon and Gold finished two-three in the 100 backstroke, thanks to Waddell and Cook. Waddell touched second (54.66) in the event to lead the charge, with Cook grabbing third place with her 55.72 time.
Ā
Adding to her already-impressive senior campaign, Kozelsky cruised to a win in the 100 breaststroke via a 1:00.50 mark. Kozelsky also competed in the 50 free later in the triple dual, finishing second with a time of 23.65.
Ā
To conclude day one of the Big Ten tri-dual, the Gophers notched a first place finish in the 800 free relay. It was the team of Waddell, Sullivan, Kelli McCarthy and McGinty that paced Minnesota in the event (7:21.39).
Ā
Also for the Gophers, Sullivan took second place in the 200 butterfly (2:03.08). Freshman Rachel Butler also secured a runner-up finish, touching the wall in 2:03.42 in the 200 individual medley.
Ā
As has become the norm in 2019-20, sophomore Joy Zhu handed Minnesota a win in the diving well. Zhu took first in 3-meter (324.75), while placing second (294.85) in the 1-meter. Freshman Jaclynn Fowler also turned in a strong performance in the 1-meter, finishing fifth with a score of 263.50.

Ā
On the men's side, day one began similarly with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:29.23) from the team of Sam Kennedy, McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Matthew Thomas.
Ā
As the Gopher men pushed their way to a split on day one, McHugh delivered the team's lone first place finish. Touching in 53.79, McHugh hauled in an important victory in the 100 breast.
Ā
In the 1000 free, junior Cameron Kelley built off his three-win performance from two weeks prior with a second place finish (9:16.20). Kelley's performance signified a two-four-five finish for the Maroon and Gold, with Aidan Dillon and Aidan Dulaney also scoring points.
Ā
Minnesota achieved another two-four-five result in the 200 free, powered by junior Tim Sates' runner-up finish (1:39.14). Fellow junior Kyle Van Niekerk and senior Nick Saulnier touched behind him to score points for the U.
Ā
Also for the Maroon and Gold, freshman Gavin Olson placed second in the 100 back (48.88). Minnesota finished second in the 800 free relay as well, led by the team of Kelley, Sates, Van Niekerk and Saulnier (6:38.13).
Ā
In the diving well, freshman Jake Butler was the highlight. Butler placed second in the 1-meter (313.25) and third in the 3-meter (370.07) on his way to registering a pair of podium finishes. Junior Maxim Royzen placed fifth in the 3-meter (318.45) for the Gophers.
