Minnesota Open to Kick Off 2020

The Golden Gophers host the Minnesota Open to begin the 2020 indoor track & field season this Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher men's and women's track & field program hosts the Minnesota Open to begin the 2020 indoor season at the newly renovated University of Minnesota Fieldhouse this Saturday.

About the 2020 Minnesota Open
The Minnesota Open is this Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse, which features a refurbished, 200-meter, six-lane track, completed in Fall 2019 by Beynon. Field events begin at 10 a.m. CT with the women's weight throw. Running events begin at 1 p.m. CT with the 60-meter hurdles prelims. Admission for the meet is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Children 10 and under are free. General parking will be available in the University Ave. Ramp and the Washington Ave. Ramp.

2019 Minnesota Open Rewind
The Gophers combined for 11 event titles at the 2019 Minnesota Open. The women won seven events, including six wins by unattached Gophers. Molly Roach won the 800 meters in her official collegiate debut on the track. Meanwhile, Libby Halbmaier (mile), Ayesha Champagnie (60-meter hurdles and long jump), Karlie Place (pole vault), Kaitlyn Long (weight throw), and Nayoka Clunis (shot put) won their respecitve events while competing unattached. On the men's side, Alex Kelner claimed the 400-meter title for the Gophers while Minnesota picked up three additional titles from unattached competitors. Teddy Frid picked up a pair of unattached event wins in the pole vault and the 60-meter hurdles while Jackson Wellenstein won the 600 meters as an unattached runner.

Track & Field Captains
On the men's side, Alec Basten, Kieran McKeag, Jackson Wellenstein, Teddy Frid, and Jonathan Tharaldsen will lead the squad in 2020 while Rachel Schow, Ayesha Champagnie, Erin Huls, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Ryan Crotty, and Val Larson will serve as captains on the women's side.

2019 Track & Field Season Rewind
The Gophers wrapped up the 2019 track & field season with six All-Americans at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships led by two First Team All-Americans in Obsa Ali (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw). Second Team All-America nods went to Alec Basten (3,000-meter steeplechase), Bethany Hasz (5,000-meter run), Tess Keyzers (shot put), and Kieran McKeag (hammer throw). The Minnesota women finished fifth at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships while the men came in eighth in the team standings.

Preseason National Rankings
The Gopher women open the season ranked No. 7 in the nation according to the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Rating Index while Minnesota comes in 30th in the men's indoor track & field national rating index. Seventeen Gophers are nationally ranked in individual events to kick off the season as well. 

Indoor Records Fall
The Gopher women have already set all-time top-10 marks in six events this season, led by Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz both breaking Minnesota's previous program record in the 5,000-meter run. 

Up Next
Next weekend, the Gophers are set to compete at Iowa's Larry Wieczorek Invite on Friday and Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa, while a group also competes locally at the UST Opener hosted by St. Thomas on Friday.
