Minnesota Announces Rowing Captains

10/1/2020 11:02:00 AM | Rowing

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher Rowing program has announced its team captains for the 2020-21 season with Meade Avery, Lindsay Eliasen and Gabby Mullally selected to lead the Maroon & Gold under second-year head coach Alicea Strodel.

"Throughout our captain nomination and voting process these three women were consistently recognized and valued by their teammates," Strodel said. "Meade, Lindsay and Gabby all lead in different ways which I think bodes well for connecting and reaching our large team.  Their areas of strengths are communication, compassion and work ethic which will be important and grounding in this mercurial time.  Together, I'm confident we will continue to grow collectively and move our team forward despite all of 2020's challenges."

A native of Lyme, N.H., Avery enters her third season with the Gophers and her second on the varsity squad. As a junior in 2019-20, Avery earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors.

"It's been a joy to be on this team and an honor to be chosen captain. Everyone plays such an important role on this team, so I'm really looking forward to highlighting that this year, especially as the future remains uncertain," Avery said. "Having the opportunity to represent the University of Minnesota in any capacity is a huge honor and not one that any of us take lightly."

A native of Chanhassen, Minn., Eliasen will be in her fourth season with the Maroon & Gold and has earned CoSIDA Academic All-District, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten merits in each of the last two seasons. Eliasen, who also added CRCA Scholar Athlete honors last year, earned a silver medal at the Big Ten championships with the first novice eight as a freshman in 2017-18.

"It's exciting and humbling to be named a team captain. Rowing and this team have become such a huge part of my life and something that has made me feel so challenged and accepted," Eliasen said. "I'm looking forward to being able to support my teammates as a captain and for us to grow on and off the water."

A native of Neenah, Wis., Mullally enters her third season with the Gopher Rowing program and second with the varsity team. As a sophomore in 2019-20, she earned CRCA Scholar Athlete, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten accolades for the Maroon & Gold.

"I'm so grateful to be part of such an amazing team and to have the honor to lead this year," Mullally said. "Everyone has so much passion for this team and the family we've created. I'm excited to continue building from where we left off last year."
