Minnesota scored four unanswered goals on the way to a 4-2 win over Minnesota Duluth on Friday evening.
DULUTH, Minn. -- The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team scored four unanswered goals on the way to a 4-2 win over No. 6 Minnesota Duluth in game one of this weekend's series at AMSOIL Arena on Friday evening.
Minnesota (2-1-0, 2-1-0 WCHA) scored three goals in the final 7:55 of the game, including late heroics from freshman Abbey Murphy on the game-tying goal and freshman Anne Cherkowski scoring the game-winner. Junior Catie Skaja led all players with two points (1g-1a), icing the win with an empty-net goal. Fellow junior Abigail Boreen started the scoring for the Gophers with her first tally of the season in the second period.
Lauren Bench recorded her first road win for the Maroon & Gold, making 26 saves on 28 shots faced, and the Gophers had a 38-28 advantage in shots on goal.
Minnesota Duluth (2-1-0, 2-1-0 WCHA) held a 2-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes of play, receiving goals from Ashton Bell and Kylie Hanley. Bulldog goaltender Emma Soderberg made 34 saves.

"Great team win here tonight on the road against a very good team," head coach Brad Frost said. "We really started to get the momentum there in the second period. It was a great goal by Abby Boreen to get us on the board, and it was real nice in the third period to tie it up and get the win. Abbey Murphy with the tying goal, her first goal as a Gopher, and then pretty shortly thereafter, Anne Cherkowski getting her first goal as a Gopher and the game-winner was pretty special as well. We're excited about the win and also looking forward to tomorrow."
Notable
Three of Minnesota's seven rookies have now scored their first collegiate goals as Murphy and Cherkowski scored their first goals for the Maroon & Gold today and Josey Dunne found the back of the net against Ohio State last weekend.
